The picture is of my tractor as purchased. It was represented as a 1954 TO-30 as evidenced by the serial number 131xxx and the z129 engine. However, the shifter has a small aluminum knob and shifter more characteristic of the TO-20 making me wonder if this isn't some combination of a 20 and a 30 (trans? rearend?). Are there other things that I can check (casting numbers, etc.) that can clear this up?

Thanks,

While I don't have any data on that tractor, I am pretty sure they changed the back end like they did on our TEA20. It was heavier built to take the extra power of the uprated engines, as Jerry has said the Ring gear is larger and so is the pinion, axle-shafts are different too, being heavier to stop snapping. The complete back end will interchange with the earlier one from behind the transmission.

I scaned my parts manual and the TO-30 has different ring and pinion and different axle housing part numbers from the TO-20. The part number of the rear axle housings for a TO-30 is 181 395 M1 (RH) and 181 397 M1 (LH)whereas the TO-20 has 181 394 M1 (RH)and 181 396 M1. Look on the axle housing and see if there are any part numbers. Hope this helps you.

Thank you.. I'll be able to "get out to the farm" this weekend and check for numbers... Everything seems to be TO-30, but the shifter is clearly not as I remember it should be.

Jim...I'm happy to see your photos. My 1950 t020 has the exact same configuration, and I've often wondered if it's origional. This is not to say you dont have a t030, they're awfully kin. The front pedal is a parking, or brake lock(I assume for locking the brakes when hauling or stopped while running) the rear pedal, as you've said is the brake. The shift knob is the exact same as mine(thought mine was an afterthought). Thanks for the photos, wish you had a serial number, but the engine would be consistant with a 30. Good luck, have fun!! Mike

Thank you... the serial number (131xxx). I just didn't give out the last three digits... (my privacy issue.)

I am sure everything transmision and forward is TO-30. I am just not sure about "the hind quarters".

Jim: The best clue to TO-20/TO-30 would be the Air Cleaner precleaner screen (not visible in photo). If the precleaner is through the dash and connected with a tube and hose to the top of the Air Cleaner, it's a TO-30. As far as I can find, the trans/rear drive on them are the same. I could be wrong, but the S/N and the Air Cleaner are dead give aways of a tractor that has been re-engined.

Looks like the pedal on mine. Nice Pix by the way. Good quality and plenty of resolution.
