I have a problem with my three point lift. First of all I have a leak on my rear axle outer seal which i know needs to be fixed. Will that cause the three point lift to let down after awhile. It is like the tractor builds up pressure and then the rear ends starts leaking and the lift start going down. Then when i try to engage the pto to lift it up it does not have enough pressure to do it. Once i let it cool down it works fine again until you start running it.

Really you need to put a pressure gauge on your system and check what pressure is building up in there. It should be 2000psi give or take a little because of wear, if the pressure is down it can't lift anything. If you email me at fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk I will send you an information sheet on what to check and what to look for. If you mail me say what tractor it is and what the problem is again. The rear axle leak is just a matter of seals or gaskets. I can give you information on that too.

Bryan, everything the other said is right. I'm not clear from your post, but your 3 point lift will naturally drift down over time after you disengage the PTO. The manual says the lift is satisfactory if a raised 2 bottom plow takes ~15 minutes or more to drift down when you disengage the PTO.
The only thing I could add from what the other guys said is that you should check the inside of your tranny when you pull the inspection plate for sludge build-up on the bottom that might interfere with oil pick-up for the pump, and when you are watching your pump run, look to see if you have a bunch of swirling around in the sump that might indicate your relief valve is leaking by. GL-1 90W mineral oil is what you want to use if you decide to replace the oil in your tranny.

Just got thru rebuilding my lift cover, had a similar problem. Jerry is right, probably got a two fold problem and one has nothing to do with the other (rear axle leak and lift problems). One thing that I found that is of great value when inspecting your lift cover condition is a digital camera. If you have a small one, put it in or at the port opening, pointing up, take your photos and then view. Great help. You can "feel" the cylinder but, nothing beats seeing it. I have a T0-30 and is very difficult to see up inside the port unless you take the wheel off. Too much trouble. Camera works better. If fluid is all on the outside of the cylinder, wipe it down, work your lift up and down and then observe. If you get a lot of leakage fast, roll up your shirt sleeves, get out your wrenches and pull the cover. A small amount of leakage is ok but, shouldn't be a lot of leakage. There are pump problems that can contribute to your problems as well (check the archives, lots of question and answers). LOL and don't drop the camera, for some reason they just don't float!!!!! !!!

The pressure to raise the lift come from the hydraulic pump which only uses the rear axle housing as a fluid reservoir. The rear axle housing is vented to the atmosphere through the dip stick tube, I believe. That rear axle leak has nothing to do with your lift performnace directly unless it's leaking fluid so fast that that it's starving the pump. Now if your axle housing isn't vented properly, that could cause your rear axle seal to leak or it could be overfilled.

You may have a leaking lift cylinder that marginally works when the oil is cool and viscous and then leaks like all get out when it heats up. Take the cover plate off wwhere the dip stick tube is located and watch to see if there is leakage from the piston/cylinder area with the lift full up. Be careful and DO NOT STICK YOUR HANDS IN THIS ACCESS PORT WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING! JUST LOOK!
I'm no h tractor hydraulics expert , but that where I would look if I had these two problems. Maybe some of the other folks who have more experience in this area can provide you some additional advice.

Sound good to me, that is what I would check for also. The pumps allways seem to work better with cold thick fluid than they do with hot. You probley have a worn Cylinder/Rings in the Lift piston. Not sure where you mean it is leaking?? Mark H.

TO AZKIDMN (Wayne)if it is shuddering usually its because the pump is not pumping on all 4 cylinders. Email me at:- fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk ..... say again what its doing so I don't have to search for what you said here and I will send you the information sheets for that problem. Tell me what model the tractor is too please.
