TE-20...what is it?

There is a TE-20 advertised locally. Is this the English version of a TO-20? Do they have the same engine?

Where TEs imported to the US from England or Canada?

Anything to look for if buying a TE...special problems etc?

Are they more or less sought after than TOs?

To be strictly accurate the TO20/30 is the US version of the TE20/TEA as the TE's were in production before the US started tractor manufacture and they imported TE's to fill the gap until the factory started up. The original idea was that the tractors would be exactly the same, but it was easier and cheaper and sensible to purchase and manufacture items in US than bring them over from UK so certain parts became different like Brakes,electrical,gearbox bearings, gearbox housing,clutches,steering box,eventually engines too.

No they didn't make a TE30, but they did make an equivalent model which was a TEA with an 85mm bore engine. In some parts of the world it was called a TE20/85 there were another couple of names for it which escape me at the moment. The first ones were made in 1951 and were 6volt then at 200,001 they changed to 12volt. TE on the plate does actually tell you what it is....A TE with a Continental engine. We have about 15 or more models of the TE series tractor in the UK including the original TE20 which was like the TO20, then we had engines running on different fuels so they all had a third letter to denote what it was "D" for TVO, "F" for diesel, then we had narrow tractors and Vineyard models all with different engines so the third letter told you what it was liked TEE which was a TVO engine but narrow width.TE37388 is a 1948 TE20 with a Continental engine (this was the last year Continentals were fitted @ tractor number TE48000)
Usually easiest way to tell any 85mm TE series tractor is the air intake on the dash panel (unless someone has changed the engine)

te20 brakeshoes are toltaly differnt had to haven my old shoes relined te brakeshoes are obsolete.all other parts interchange with the to20

All Lucas electrical parts. Brakes are different. Transmission housing is aluminum, not cast iron. Hood is latched differently. Hood dog legs are aluminum, not steel. That"s about all that"s different from a TO-20.

Not all the "hood doglegs" as you call them were Aluminium only a few tractors are like that.

It is the same thing as a to-20. it was made in england and shipped to the us. nothing different at all really

Well it will have a Lucas electrical system, and I think the brakes are different, but very close.
They were imported until the US factory got up and producing TO20s. Both have Continenetal engines.
Later in the UK they switched to engines made by the Standard Motor Company, and the gasoline model became known as the TEA20. Canada continued to import from the UK so got these instead of the TO20.
