Ring End Gap Question

Have a new hydraulic lift cylinder, rings and piston. Rings are standard rings. Specs call for a ring end gap of .003-.008. No more than .008. With rings 2in. in cyl., they measure .010. Am I missing something here or what? T0-30 tractor....

The cylinder bore is worn. Maybe as much as .007 / 3.14159. Might need oversize rings, but the bore may need to be opened up so its not barrel shaped. Check the ring gap all through the travel and see how much its barrel shaped.

All parts are new, cylinder, piston and rings. Never used. Just received them from Davis Tractor yesterday. All part#'s match up to tractor. I know that rings will expand with heat but, I don't know if they will expand that much..... .....

If the shop manual calls for .003 to .008 and you have .010 with new parts, either the rings or cylinder or both are out of tolerance. Its likely that the .003 minimum is to allow that much for ring expansion with heat.

That's my way of thinking as well. Measured the new cylinder bore and it is correct. I guess I will soon know, one way or the other. The old rings in the old cylinder measured .026. It was leaking like a faucet but, believe it or not, the lift had plenty of lift to it. Things work backwards here in S.C.. Thanks for the info....

With multiple rings, be sure the gaps are as far from being aligned as possible to lengthen the path way for the oil leaking through the gaps.
