TO-30 Hydaulics/Pin?

Just got a '54 TO-30. One thing that it needs is the long (draft?) pin that attaches the end piece of the big lift spring to the rear case. This is apparently a long pin that goes through the pivot point on the 3-point hitch rocker. The rocker pivots from the center portion (if it were there!) The previous owner didn't have one and used the tractor without this pin (with a brush hog and plow). My questions are these:

1. Can anything be damaged by operation without this pin?
2. Do I need it? Where can I get the correct replacement pin? And what is it called?

The lift seems to work but I have not done any serious lifting.

Jim

I finally found the right part number now that I understand what you are looking for. It's called "Pin Assembly, Hitch" and it's Part No 181 060 M91. It wasn't located on the hitch part list, it was on the drawbar parts list;go figure! I've seen them in the local farm stores in the place where the hitch pins and hitch parts, drawbars, etc are located. I'm sure your local MF dealer or some of the parts houses carry them if you're in farming country.

If I understand your question correctly, the pin you are talking about is Part # 195 481 M1 "Pin, Rocker to Yoke". This pin transmits the implement load feedback to the control valve via the rod that runs through the spring and a linkage on the inside of the housing.
I doubt that not using it hurt anything in the hydraulic system. There was just no feedback for draft control to the lift hydraulics. This could, however, cause a problem if you were plowing and hit a rock or root since the draft control would be inoperative and it could cause an upset of the tractor.
Since you are a new TO-30 owner, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the world of old tractors. I also have a '54 TO-30. I'd also like to give you some advise. Do youself a favor and order an owners manual, a parts manual and a factory shop manual. It will allow you to understand the various systems and their use as well as how to safely operate your tractor. There are several source for these books and you can do a search on this forum to find out where the best deal can be found. Make sure you get a factory manual, not an IT manual.
Hope this helps.

I use both the I&T manual and the Ferguson shop manual. Actually the I&T is easier to find things and has different pictures so they kind of compliment each other. The I&T also has a nice condensed service page right in the front of the book for the TE20, TO20, and the TO30. I needed some information the other day about the differences in carburetors and the I&T manual showed four different carburetors and the different numbers for comparable parts. I did not see this in the Factory manual.

Well I have the UK Service Manual and it shows all the carbs in mine, is your a USA print and are you sure it is a genuine Ferguson Service manual. Even my old Service Manual had all of them in. This new manual has all the jet sizes in too.

My manual says Ferguson Dealer shop Manual covering TE-20, TO-20, & TO-30 Tractors. Prepared by the service department of Harry Ferguson, Detroit Michigan. It has a blue cover and I think that it is a reprint, but it does not say so. I looked through every page and the information for the four different carburetors was not included. Is there a different more involved Ferguson manual? Mine hase 187 pages.

Thank you.. I do have the Ferguson owners manual, the Ferguson shop manual, AND the IT shop manual. (but no parts manual). The pin was in several pictures in the shop manual but without a name or number. I'll look at this site or maybe I can find a MF dealer nearby.

Incidently, I am an "old" owner, not very "new" :) The TO-30 was my "first" tractor in 1952 when I was 9. I am just now trying to "duplicate" that tractor for "oldtime sake". I still need some parts and a lot of elbow grease... A Pic (large file) of the as-purchased state of the project at

I am still looking for a Monroe EZ-Ride. Mine was purchased from the dealer with one. Again, thanks for the welcome comments...

Read it again Jerry, he is talking about the hinged pin that goes through the bush the Rocker pivots on.

No it wont do any harm to use it without the pin, but it is possible that it could distort the bush the rocker pivots on. This pin also acts as a reinforcement for this bush to strengthen it when there is a load on the rocker. The pin is called a "Hinge pin" for obvious reasons. The Ferguson part number is 4114, it is not the same as the one on the later 35 tractors although it may look the same at first glance. You can get this pin as a "Sparex" part too, part number S70, order from this site or your local tractor dealer.
It should not have done anything to the Rocker, using the tractor without this pin.
You might like to check the Control Spring end play next time you have something on the tractor on the hydraulics, there should be an end-float of .020" in the Spring, in other words you should be just able to turn it when you have something on the hydraulics in the raised position and the top link in its correct position.

That is the same style pin you require but that one is from a 35 type tractor, the pin you require has a thicker part behind the head end of the pin (in the foreground). On the TE20 series tractors the hole on the left side of the axle that this pin goes through is larger than the one on the right side, this is to allow the bush from the rocker to pass through it when it is being replaced.I feel sure that your TO30 tractor will be the same.
