With the mowing season opening up, I think it is appropriate to post a safety warning about hidden hazards. I mow a long lane with several culverts crossing it and am reminded each time I near one that if I dropped my rear wheel into this depression, my 9N would undoubtedly roll over with me ending up under it. My newer Ford tractor has ROPS [roll over protection structure] plus a seat belt and I don't trust it any more than the 9N. Because a tractor doesnt have independant springing, particularly on the rear wheels, a sudden drop of a foot or more under the rear wheel would be enough to roll the machine with probably fatal results. One such incident recently in the neighborhood, resulted in a fatality for a farmer of 40 years experience, he just didn't see the hole coming under the heavy growth of weeds. >>The second danger in mowing is that you try to get close to the property lines and sometimes this means going under low hanging tree branches. They can and do sweep unwary operators off the seat and the only place to fall is under the whirling mower blades. >>I don't want to rain on anybody's picnic, but I haven't seen anyone mention these ever present dangers. Thank you for making us "no timers" and "low timers" more aware of the potential dangers that we face! As indicated in your story about the "farmer of 40 years"; I bet our "old timers" appreciate what you have pointed out here as well!
