First off I want to mention how helpful this site has been in answering some interesting questions.

Right now my problem is with my TSX 458 carburator. It recently swallowed the butterfly valve (which I hope has decided to shoot out the exhaust) and my local Massey dealer could not find a replacement that fit but sold me a top of another carb with a slightly larger valve. The tsx 458 is about an inch in diameter and this one is about 1 1/16" in diameter.

After putting in a rebuild kit and adjusting the set screws accordingly the tractor runs but barely. To keep it running I need to add choke now and again and I am not sure which of the screws to open or close to fix this.

Also, I am having a governor problem that I believe will be fixed when I get into it and start renewing bearings and seals. The governor arm is sticking and will not let the carb advance to full. Right now I am lucky to get about 1/4 of the throttle movement. When I reach down and advance the carb linkage to full the governor does drive it back toward idle.

Thanks,

Tom

Presuming by the term "butterfly", you mean the throttle plate, you can get a new throttle plate in a rebuild kit for this carburetor. No need to replace the upper throttle body. Secondly, as gshadel points out, it's doubtful that the throttle plate can get by the intake valve.
If you installed an oversized throttle body, does it seal properly at the intake manifold attach flange? It's gotta' be leakproof there or the mixture gets leaned out and it'll run bad. If you used the original TSX458 venturi (the little brass convergent-divergent passage) in the oversized throttle body, you should be ok and you just need to folllow the factory manual instructions for adjusting the carb.
If I were you, I'd get a kit and replace the lost thottle plate and reinstall the original throttle body. them I'd look for the old throttle plate in the manifold.
Hope this helps.

I can't imagine that butterfly plate clearing the intake valve to get into the cylinder. It is probably stuck in your manifold somewhere, you may need to drop the manifold to clear it if you can't get it with a plumbers snake or something.
That may or may not improve your running problem.

I don't know anything about retro-fitting a larger ID carb body, don't know if that will work well or not. The big screw is the power adjust screw, which is your mixture control above idle speed. The book settings may not be right with your retrofit, might need to adjust both the idle mix and power screw to get a richer mix to suit your needs.

From my experience with governors, often problems are in the linkages themself, either binding or misadjusted.

Once you get your carb problem straightened out, I recommend going thru the gov. linkage adjustment procedures in the manual, step by step to try to line it out... that may help you avoid pulling the front wheels get at the governor.
Good luck

Were you running it when this happened? I can't imagine that happening in an updraft carburator. I'm thinking someone told you that happened. You have a screw holding both the choke and throttle butterfly that also had to go somewhere. Can't imagine even the screw getting sucked up that far. Don't claim to know everything, I could be wrong once. lol

It's probably just me, but i'm real confused. Do i understand correctly that your butterfly valve got sucked thru the manifold into the engine? or maybe is hung in the manifold? and you bought another carb input horn and butterfly from a mf dealer but it is 1/16 of an inch too big but you installed it anyway? If i understand all that correctly, you have answered your own question about why it doesn't run well. Having to add choke often indicates you are getting too much air in relation to the fuel, but you have several issues that could be contributing to that. The long screw is the power screw and the small one is the idle mixture, but i doubt you can adjust them to fix your problem. If i'm just confused, i apologize, and maybe someone else can offer some suggestions.

Okay, it sounds like I am going to have to pull off the manifold and see if the throttle plate is in there somewhere and put it back on the original upper carburator body.

The rebuild kit for this card does not come with this plate, though it does have the screws.

I think you are all correct in that the larger throttle is providing too much air without me changing the jet size.

Also I will try and set the governor according to the manual as soon as I get the tractor running properly again.

Thanks,
Tom
