If you have a pretty good 6V system, no reason to spend the big money and time to convert to 12 volt. Spend a few dollars to make sure your battery cables are stout and fat, and your connections are clean and strong, your 6 volts should start on the coldest Winter day.
Most the posts I see concerning charging problems are from people that have a 12 volt conversion that ain't working right. But, 12 Volt system has a couple advantages too, it lets you run 12V equipment, like lights, horns, sprayer pumps, etc. which are easier to find than 6V equipment. I've been looking for a good old fashioned 6 volt OOOGAH horn , can't find them, I see 12 volt horns all the time! And the other guys are right, your starter will turn faster on 12V. I'm not a 6 volt purist, when I got my TO-20 about 6 years ago, I decided if the generator ever died, I'd go ahead and convert to 12 volt then. Still waiting for that to happen.
