TO 20 Oil Filter / Pick-up Tube

Can any one please explain to me how the oil filter works on the TO 20? After examining mine, it appears that with the original design the oil filter is useless. The tube that goes through the oil filter (mine has no holes in the tube) is plugged when you tighten the bolt, which holds the bottom oil pan plate on. The actual pick up tube is on the outside (next to) of the filter and appears that no filtering takes place. Should the tube running through the oil filter have holes in it? Someone please help!!!!

Good question. I have a similar T020. Just got a new oil pan and its cast iron, not steel like the original. If you had your question answered, I'd like to know about the filter also. The new filter came in paper, the original was metal. What's up with that?

Geo, I don't know anything about replacement pans, sorry. I know that mine is steel.
The filter is probably paper, last time I got a filter, it had a real thin perferated sheet metal casing around it, looked like it was probably paper inside.

The filter is not to be confused with the metal screen strainer that goes in the oil pan first, then the oil filter slides up inside the strainer on the oil return line. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Clint, That oil filter on the TO-20 is just about useless. I think the screen is the most important part, it prevents crud from getting pulled into the pump, which could lock up the pump and do serious damage.
That filter only filters the oil that is gravity drained from the head, some of the oil is caught in the block casting to funnel it into the center crank bearing, where it drains thru the filter thru a couple weep holes in that drain tube. I've considered drilling a couple more holes in that drain tube to try to promote more oil filtration, but figured it's been good enough for 50 years, maybe it isn't worth messing with it.
When I changed the oil in my TO20 the first time, I found the prev. ownerhad installed the strainer upside down, I've heard other say they have seen the same thing. make sure you re-install the strainer with the open end down.

Hi. Is the strainer the steel cup that fits around the filter? Also, if you know, I ordered a new oil pan and it came in cast iron and the filter is made of cardboard. Does that sound right?

Gshadel, its been a while since I looked, but I believe it�s the center Camshaft bearing that is lubricated by oil running back down from the head on the TO20. The TO30 camshaft bearings however are all pressure lubricated. The center Crankshaft bearing is always pressure lubricated and that is why there is only a small hole in the oil filter tube. If you drilled more or bigger holes you would lower your oil pressure past the center crank bearing.

Clint, the hole should be there in the tube through the filter, but it is very small. Clean out the tube from the bottom where the oil pan plate threads in. Dan
