TO-30 lift raises just fine, so fine in fact, that it won't lower unless a heavy implement is attached. With no implement attached, you can sit on it for half an hour and it will only lower to the mid point. If you crank the tractor, the lift will immediately raise to the upmost position even though the finger tip control is in the down position. Just started this problem today. Noticed that bottom plow would only sink but just so far. When I took the plow off and cranked the tractor, lift immediately raised. Fluid is fine. Must be some sort of pressure relief valve somewhere. Need a little help.

Before you do anything mad, have you checked if the Control Fork that moves the valve actually moves it. Try it with your hand in the inspection hole (DONT PUT YOUR HAND IN THE OIL) move it backwards and forwards gently to see if it will work up and down, if it doesnt, stop the engine and feel for the control valve at the bottom of the fork if it has come out of place. Sounds like the same problem I'm having. As I said in my post, when the tractor was cold, I was able to switch from snowblower to blade, but after about an hour of work, when I went to switch back, the hitch lifted on it's own (I made sure the PTO was disengaged and the lever was "fully down"). This happened before and I had a lot of trouble getting it back down.

I'm waiting for more humane conditions (it's currently -30 C (-22 F) here) before I attempt any fixes as my shed is currently unavailable. If you try the diesel fuel tactic and it's successful, can you let me know?

You bet I will. It's not -22F but, I too don't have a closed in shed but, it's cold and windy, will wait for a break in the weather. Think I will try what John/UK advised first....Will let u know..... ..... ..... ...

Sod, When the lift won't drop, it is usually due to crud plugging-up the exhaust valves, or valves sticking in the pump. Also, the quadrant control (lever for making the lift go up and down) is adjustable and suprisingly sensitive to lift response. You might just need to adjust the quadrant. Do you have a manual to read how to do that... I don't have mine here. I'd try checking the quadrant control 1st, it is easy, don't have to tear into the tranny. If that don't get it, might want to consider a good tranny fluid clean & replace.

I have a manual on quadrant adjustment. Tried that earlier with no result. Still the same. Will try putting in about 5gal. of diesel fuel and run for five or ten min., drain, refill with fluid and try that first. Was also advised to push on the exhaust valves to try and free it if it's seized. If all this fails, will have to pull pump. Thanks for the info..... ..... ...

go into archives in the Ford 8N and 9N section and type in, Lift arms wont go down, you will see a good article written by Zane and i think your problem is covered in there ,let us know how you do

Pulled the inspection plate, drained fluid, seems I will have to pull the pump. Sludge is unreal. Will have to clean interior as well as pump. May as well do it all at one time. Never pulled a pump. Read other sites on pulling the pump on 8n's, does the to-30 pump remove in the same fashion? From what I read is remove pto shaft, separate fork from pump and then drop pump, any other precautions? Any help appreciated..... ..... .....

That's about it, but you may find you have to slide it back and forth a bit as they are a tight fit. Well at at least on a TE model so it's a bit of an assumption.
And note that they are rather heavy and when it finally pops out of the hole it can drop on the ground in a hurry if you're not prepared.
