This may or may not be a simple question. On the back of the tractor (a to-30), there are teo chains hanging off of the vacinity of the pto shaft and connect to the 3pt hitch lifting arms. What are the purpose of these chains and how do you adjust them? I purchased an operators manual and a repair manual but nowhere does it discuss these chains. Also, where the chains mount by the pto shaft, there are upper and lower mounting holes. Are these part of the adjustment?

When you have an implement mounted on the 3 point linkage the chains prevent the whole thing swinging into the tyres. the chains should be fixed to the TOP hole if the brackets have more than one hole.Just make sure that when you have the implement fully raised that the chains are not tight preventing the hydraulics from lifting completely or you will be blowing the Safety valve all the time. When the implement is at the top the chains should be slightly slack, but only just. The idea of the brackets with two holes is so that you can use the brackets on left or right hand side.

only thing they do is keep your lift arms off your tires they just check side movement but only a little DO NOT shorten them.

Well, too late. I already got the grinder after them and shortened them a little. How do I go about obtaining a new set or what are the correct parts to make a new set?

As others have said, the purpose of the chains is to limit sidways moment into the wheels. Like wize shortening them is not harmful as long as there is some slackness. If the chains are too tight then sidways movement of the lift arms can be limited to the point that it is dificult to attach/dis-attach implements. Some side to side movement is necessary for ground engaging equiptment to allow the tractor to follow the land contour while the implement continues to track it's path.

Unless you maned then totally tight your probally alright.

Don't have the chains so short that when the implement is fully lifted the chains are tight, if you do the safety valve will keep blowing, the chains must be slack enough to allow the implement to go to fully lifted height without being tight, they should have a little slack in them at this point.

i think you are talking about the Check chains ,they should be part of the stabilizer and lift assembly in your parts manual, they keep whatever you are using on the rear from swinging and maybe getting caught on the tire grips like happened to me good luck
