Rod Bushings on a TO-20

Bought a To-20 last year with a cracked block, and am rebuilding the motor after getting the block repaired. the rebuild kit I got from the local tractor parts place had new rod bushings, so I took out one of the old ones and tapped the new one into the rod. the new wrist pin doesn't fit. measured the opening versus the pin diameter and the difference is 20 thousandths. (.842 vs .862) I called yesterdays tractor to order the right size and was told to have a local machine shop "bake them in" and they should work.

Does anyone know what this process takes? I checked with my machine shop and the guy there said they would "hone them in". I assume this means install the bushings and then hone them to the right size to accept the wrist pin. any advice?

John,Tell your machine shop man you want to have your conecting rods reconditioned. This will inclued installing your wrist pin bushings and hone them to fit your wrist pins. Also resize the big end of the rod and clean and check them to make sure they are true.

At the same time while your at machine shop get them to check the big ends of your conecting rods so when you install your new bearings you dont get too much end squeeze. I dont know why this happens but the caps and rods will get out of round maybe because of over heating and recooling

He's got it right...you always have to hone the bushings to fit the new pins. They should be a light push fit...no slop! Fred OH
