TO30 12 volt conversion help needed.

I hesitate to post this message since I have seen so many on the subject, but I am trying to convert my TO30 to 12 volts using the kit from YT site and boy am I confused. Here are the components I am working with -- Battery, ammeter, ignition switch (toggle), starter solenoid (with a button on it?), coil (12 volt w/int. resis.), distributer, starter, alternator, and a S in the tranny. I got rid of the voltage regulator. I can get it to turn over by pushing the button on the starter solenoid, but no apparent spark from plugs. My starter solenoid is attached to one of the bolts I would say is a terminal block, nothing on the other bolt. It seems I need a starter switch somewhere but can't figure out where to put it or why I need one. I put it in the S position on the gear floor. Is there a diagram that uses these components I mentioned? What am I missing? I have wired it in what appears to be the correct order but will recheck if I am not missing any parts.

I will try what you recommended. I do have the instructions that came with the kit, but I am not too impressed. I will try to wire it without the solenoid as you stated Jerry. How does the "S" position activate the electrical system, or what does it do would be a better question?

There is a rail in the transmission that mechanically pushes on the starter switch in the bellhousing, closing the circuit to connect the battery directly to the starter.

Tom I have a TO-30 that was converted to 12V and I do not have a starter solenoid on it. I think you may have the wrong kit.
The TO-30 system used a starter switch (located on the top of the bell housing under the battery) that is activated by moving the gear lever to the "S" position. That connected the battery directly to the starter, no solenoid involved. The primary ignition circuit consists of a wire from the battery side of the starter switch to one side of the key switch, a wire from the other side of the key switch to one side of the resistor (I have a six volt ignition coil. For a twelve volt coil, you go from the key to the coil directly)) and from the other side of the reistor to the coil and then from the other side of the coil to the distributor. The system is a NEGATIVE ground system. I believe the alternator wire is also attached to the battery side of the starter switch. I see no reason why you can't hook yours up the same way. In using the starter button and solenoid, you are defeating a safety device that prevents the tractor from being started in gear, the cause of lot of potentially fatal accidents.
I would strongly recommend you contact the YT parts people and make sure that you got the right kit and consider hooking the system up the way I described it above.

Hi Tom... I feel sure the instructions... diagrams were probably left out of the "kit" If it were me, I'd check the YT e mail address and let them know there are no instructions. I feel sure they'll help. Good luck... Mike
