Slow Leak on a TO30

Hey guys. I love the site, and all the information you have to share. It makes new owners like myself, enjoy owning a piece of Americana. I recently bought a 53 Ferguson TO30 and plan to restore it. I have found all the replacement parts that I believe I will need. The only problem I foresee is a leak that originates from the body of the tractor where the brake arm is attached, just below the choke pull, near the air filter. I have no idea why it leaks a light colored oil or how to repair it. Please help. Thank you for your time guys.

If its light coloured oil it could be oil with water mixed in it, the water gets in the steering box through the seal under the steering wheel when you power wash it or leave it stood outside. Some of the guys on here have filled the steering box with a grease and oil mixture it works just as good and doesn't leak and there is no strip down involved. Just suck all the oil out of the box first.

I"m also thinking its from the Steering assembly and probably leaking from the seals around the steering arms. Replaced mine this year. Found the process in the manual -- not too challenging. Parts were not cheap, but bigger boys and toys, etc...

Look at the bell housing just aft of the engine. At the bottom there should be a small drain hole with a cotter pin in it. Some people cork this up to hide a leaking internal seal.

There is a oil seal where the steering arm enters the steering housing. When the seal is bad, it will leak steering fluid. I have a 52 TO-30, it does the same. Not sure how to replace the seal. Hope this is the location you are speaking of. Best to clean the area well and then locate the leak. Good luck!!!!! !!

Is it engine oil or gear oil ? My steering gearbox leaked a little bit and was very slow. Check the oil line going to the oil pressure gauge also. I am almost finished with my 1954 TO-30 and it took about $2500 but I fixed all I could find wrong with it. Hope this will help you. Dave

Little Dave,

If you replaced the oil seals on the steering housing, did you have to disassemble the steering housing or did you replace them from the outside? Don't have a manuel that shows that procedure. Want to replace mine, leaks bad!!

Sodbuster you have to pull the steering gear housing and instrument panel as an assembly from the tractor. Then you take it apart from the inside.I have a manual on it and it is detailed on how to do it. I can scan it and email it to you if you send me your email address. Dave

Fellas what you should do as an easy fix is suck as much oil out of the steering housing as you can with one of those inexpensive suction hand pumps and replace the oil with chassis grease. Now your going to leak for a while until all that residual oil drains out. But you'll never have to worry about oil or lube again. Its good forever.It sure beats disasembling all that stuff.

I USE A BENTONITE GREASE FOR GEARBOXES AT WORK ( LIKE A BOAT MOTOR LOWER END GREASE ) A LITTLE THINNER THAN AXLE GREASE , MUTCH THICKER THAN OIL . I'VE USED IT IN LEAKY BRUSH HOG GEARBOXES WITH MUCH SUCCESS , IT'S THIN ENOUGH TO SQUEEZE THROUGH A SMALL OPENIMG AND STAY ON THE GEAR FACES . SHOULD WORK GREAT FOR STEERING BOXES
