I'm rebuilding the Z134 in my '59 TO35. When I tore it down it did not have a thermostat but I want to be sure it is right when I put it back together. Do you guys. with more experience than I, use a thermostat or not and where on the engine is it located if you do?

I agree with the other comments. According to my 1955 TO-35 parts book it's # 181 566 M1. The gasket is 181 526 M1. It fits under the elbow water outlet.

On the 35, with 134 engine, the thermostat is located where the top hose enters the engine. FYI, it is not the same thermostat as for the 30 (which fits totally inside the hose and does not mate to the engine as the 35 thermostat does). You should install one. NAPA has one, as do most of the tractor mail order places, and of course your MF dealer. A light film of gasket sealant on the surface will hold it in place while you re-install the housing.

A functional thermostat is always recommended. Provides quicker heating in the winter and cooler running in the summer. Keeps water temp at a constant operating temperature. Normally, it is located in the top water hose with the expansion coils nearest the engine. An inoperative thermostat, or one that has been removed, for one reason or another, will cause excess condensation and crankcase dilution. Make sure that your temperature gauge is operational. Many people will remove the thermostat either because they don't have another or they believe their cooling will be better, not so. It is there for a reason. Hope this helps. I am not fully acquainted with the Z134 engine but, nearly all engines incorporate a thermostat.....

I have a 55 To35 and experienced the same. I wasn't sure what the exact temperature numbers were so I replaced the guage. I also decided to replace the Thermostat. So I took the hose off where it should be to take to the tractor shop and found that it wasn't there. I asked if I should put a new one in and the local dealer said that a lot of farmers pulled them out to help cool down the enginges. I didn't buy it and figured if they made one at one point there was a reason and it should be there. So I put one in it.
