my 6 volt gen. quit working and I want to change it to 12 volt but dont know where to start.Can anyone help? Nohttps://www.yesterdaystractors.com/store/parts/convcat.htm: TO30ALT12V will this kit work?

I would think that it will if they are advertising it to do that conversion. It should have everything in it that you will need.

I think the conversion kit mentioned is a quality product, but I need to add a wrinkle here. I'm just starting to install mine now, and already there is a significant problem. The new upper bracket is twice as thick as the original, so to install it correctly the water pump stud will have to be replaced with one about 1/4-inch or so longer (or with an equivalent bolt). Now, start adding up the hassle of pulling the radiator, water pump and maybe even the water pump housing if a machine shop is needed to remove the stud, plus tracking down new gaskets and you come up with a project that is anything but simple. And I haven't even started the wiring yet.

Oh great. I just ordered this kit about 2 hours ago..I'am depressed !! I take back the simple part.
Does YT tractors know about this ??
The people who design this crap should be made to install just one and maybe they'll do it right.

Ok, I received my 12 v conversion yesterday.Had it installed in less than an hour. No problems with the install. Man what a difference. No way would I ever go back to a 6 volt system. I saved my 6 v system in case I ever sell and the next guy is crazy enough to want to go back to it. But I'm telling you the best thing to ever happen to the auto, bus tractor etc. was an alternator. I can put all my lights on and you would never know it The volt meter still shows 14V charge. Try it guys you'll like it !

Can you just grind down the thickness a bit where it bolts on? Might save a fair bit of work.

Hi Jim W, and thanks for the thought. I considered that too, but I"m thinking they must have a reason for designing it that way (maybe inferior steel!), so I"m going to try to not alter it. I may try a lock nut instead of the lock washer if there is enough of the stud sticking out. I"m mostly irked at the company for not planning around this shortcoming. Have a good one!

Just had yet another thought, for what it's worth - could you chop the piece that goes under the nut off the original and weld it on to the end of the new one?
(Nyloc is certainly more elegant if it will work)

Nyloc might be a brand name, not sure. They're the nuts with the nylon inserts so they don't loosen off.

Okay, that"s the sort of lock nut I was thinking about, I"d just never heard that name. If the stud is long enough that nylon insert"ll do fine. If not, I may still be able to use one of those thin star-type lockwashers. I"ll try it this afternoon. Thanks, Jim.
