I've got all my parts together and plan to build the engine and reconnect the halves of my tractor over the Thanksgiving weekend, with the help of my son. When I took the tractor (a salvage yard save) apart, it had the weep hole plugged with old solidified oil and dirt. The liquid oil, I believe was engine oil., but I cannot be sure.

How much work is it, since I've already got the tractor apart to change the seal on the main shaft where it enters the transmission. The tractor is a gasser, with a single clutch?

I also have the PTO seal to replace, to stop a major oil leak there, but I have read in the archives that I should not take the PTO shaft out more than about 4 inches or I could have some trouble getting it back in. The manual tells me I can pull it all the way out if I loosen the dowel pins but I do not know where they are, and cannot find them in my manuals. I also wonder if it is necessary to pull the PTO all the way out to just replace the seal? I believe the bearing to be OK.

Just for information the engine on this little tractor was toast. Both the head and block were cracked and I have managed to obtain replacements free of any cracks. I have a comprehensive rebuild kit obtained from our sponser and should have the head out of the shop tomorrow.

The radiator was full of leaks at 7 lbs. pressure and the block had the water jacket around the #1 sleeve completely full of solidified crud. The transmission had about a half gallon of water under the oil and I am only hoping the hydraulics are OK. I have washed out the transmission with diesel and I was told the hydraulics were working fine when the tractor was parked last year because of milky oil in the engine.

I have benefited tremendously from the information on this site and thank everyone for their continued responses. This is my first tractor rebuild and I am learning a lot while enjoying the challenge. I have manuals coming out of my ears but they are not enough information for a pilgrim such as I.

Thanks to everyone,

Dave

The dowels are the pins that secure the pump into the tractor. If you look around the area just below the round inspection covers on the side of the transmission housing under the seat, you will see an oval plate fastened with two nuts, there is one plate each side of the tractor, these are the dowels. Slacken the nuts on these dowel plates

Thanks for your reply John. That solves my problem as I am going to have to remove the entire PTO shaft after all.

When I withdrew the shaft slightly to replace the seal I found the reason it was leaking. The bushing the seal rides on which is connected to the bearing is pitted badly and that is what ruined the seal. I will have to press on a new bearing before replacing the seal.

Hi Dave;
You might want to check the rear main seal- it might be the cause of (or contributor to) the oil collecting in the bell housing. And, with the flywheel removed, might be a good time to have it resurfaced if necessary. I have replaced the tranny input shaft seal, but the details of the operation have faded from memory. I don't recall there being anything tricky about it, though. Just take your time and have fun!

Hi Dave, That is quite an undertaking and a tip of the hat to you. I was the one who mentionned about not pulling PTO shaft more than 4" since I had read somewhere that it would be very difficult to find the spline since the shaft has a joint along the way but I hope someone here can shed some light on this subject.
Nevertheless pulling it 4" will permit installing the seal easily.

Keep us informed of your progress please and thanks for the update.
