When I let my hydraulics all the way down they will not lift back up until I lift the arms up a couple inches by hand. I am new to tractors and this 1952 TO30 is my first. With the blade on it there is no problem. When my new boom pole is on it and I let it all the way down it will not come back up on it's own until I lift it a couple inches. When I first got the tractor the transmission case was full of the milky gunk. I pulled the 3 drain plugs and removed about 10 gallons of it, put 6 gallons of diesel in it, ran it around the yard and then refilled it with 6 gallons of the proper oil from the Massey-Ferguson dealer. All works fine except when they go all the way down. Any Ideas?

Check for play in the Control Spring under the seat, When you have the blade on you use the top link so it doesn't happen, when you use the boom pole you have nothing on the top link connection and if there is play in it it will alter the linkage inside to the Control Valve. There should be .020" end play (you should be just able to turn it) in the spring when you have an implement fitted with the top link in place and the implement in the raised position. The hydraulics/gearbox should have 5 gallons of oil from completely empty so probably you are overfull, this wont make any difference to the hydraulics but it will leak oil onto your brakes. Check the dipstick on the right hand side for the level and if you take out one of the next to bottom screws on the round inspection covers on the side under the seat and let any excess oil run out.

OK, try checking that the control forks inside the back end are attached to the control valve on the back of the hydraulic pump - they can come disconnected - see the archives for how to check this safely without losing a finger or two. Refitting them requires patience and some bits of threaded rod, angle iron, stubby wrenches and nuts to 'spread' the forks so that they can be refitted easily (at least, that's what I've used).

After that, make sure that the hydraulics are set up correctly - again the archives will help.

Not much else to go wrong, really.

A good manual is a must for these tractors, try to get a copy of the reprinted Ferguson manual, if nothing else looking at the pictures combined with comment you may get from here will help you piece the problem together.
