MF-35 - Hydraulic Filter??

F-I-L"s MF35 Diesel hasn"t had hydraulic fluid changed in over 15 years (maybe more). The oil is a little off-color, not milky but then the tractor"s been shed kept and never been exposed to wet weather. For a 1962, it has just over 5000 hours. He has an "owners" manual that came with the tractor -- somewhere.... ((I bought HIS brother"s tractor and its tranny had oil almost white)). I saw a post on another site about a MF tractor with an internal hydraulic filter, safety wire to secure it , etc. -- is there an internal filter on this tractor, or do I just drain - drain - drain?? Its happening tomorrow. I"ve got the motivation, buckets and new fluid. Any help you can give wud be appreciated.

Hi Dale. Yes there is a filter, but it"s better described as a screen. It"s on the inlet to the hydro pump. I understand there is a safety wire on it. To access it, remove the PTO shifter cover, the round one on the left side of the tranny under the seat. Take note of how the shifter is connected to the gear, you"ve got to get it back on the same way, but it"s not hard to do. Then reach in and just forward of the hole you"ll find the screen with a screw cap on with raised sections to act as handles. If you have the wire, take it off and unscrew the cap and take the screen out. You can wash it in paint thinner, household solvent, varsol to clean it. Of course it"s best to do this after the oil is drained out. When you pull the drain plugs, one near the front and one near the back of the tranny, don"t be too shocked if you find metal shards clinging to the tip of the magnetic plug. Mine had some. Washing the tranny out with diesel or kerosene is a good idea. I used a 5 gallon gas can full.
What oil are you using, TDH tractor fluid or 80-90 weight GL1 mineral oil? Either is fine. Don"t use GL5 like a car or truck axle would use because the EP additives will damage brass/bronze parts in the tranny. Hope this helps.

There is a cup below the screen. Be sure to lift it with the filter, else the collected grunge will run directly into the pump.
