Quieter muffler

I tried to quiet down my 35 with a car style muffler. What a mess. The engine ran like crap, backfired, wouldn't accelerate quickly, acted just like the back pressure was too high. It was a muffler for a Honda 4 cylinder of about the same size, with overhead cams, so I thought it would pass more exhaust flow than my lowly tractor engine would. Then with one backfire it blew the seam open and that was it, the muffler was done for. A stocker went back on. Are these engines normally that sensitive to back pressure changes? Why is so sensitive?

Laughing Out Loud.My 20 needed a muffler/pipe assembly,so i went out and bought a factory one.But after i bought it,i told my wife that the next time i needed on,that i was gonna go to the muffler shop and have one made out of thicker pipe.Reading your post made me change my mind.I guess the reason i think it is funny is because what you did sounds alot like something i would try.And my luck also. :)

Hmmm, that's interesting. I'm sure your Fergie probably has lower compression than a Honda, and runs a lot slower RPM's too. Don't know if any of that has anything to do with it. Might need to really oversize a car muffler to insure enough flow, but minimal resistance. Sounds like you need one of James stealth mufflers

My 'stealth' exhaust (shorter, quieter and allows me to get into the garage) is the rear box off a Ford Granada (2.8 litre V6) - works OK for my TED but is not a perfect fit on the manifold.

The tall non-stealth exhaust is known in the village - in fact people are beginning to like listening to it working in the orchards/fields - I've heard some say they can hear the distinctive note of the Standard engine a good distance away . . . . . . At least everyone knows when I stop for lunch!!
