Z129 Engine rebuilt, Cam Shaft and Crankshaft Reground and mounted on Block. Machine shop that did this is 75 miles from here so brought engine home and reassembled. I carefully mounted distributor and did static timing. Engine coughs and sputters but will not run, except for a few revolutions and dies. Carburetor float looks normal as per manual, compression looks good,
that is: 105,110, 102, 102. Carburetor Idle screws set to 7/8 & 1-1/4. The Plugs are firing. My thought is that maybe the cam timing might be off. I read something somewhere that such is possible, even though the gear marks are meshed in properly. I'd like to confirm this but can't think of a good way of doing so. The only thing I can think of is that according to the Manual, after firing, on the next TDC, the Exhaust Valve closes and the Intake Valve Opens. This seems a bit coarse though since those cam lobes aren't straight drops and rises.
Of course, the problem may be something else, I simply don't know.
Any good ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Jim, are you sure that you have plenty of fuel at the carburetor? Open the nut at the bottom, holding a container to catch the $2 +/gallon gas. Make sure the valve under the gas tank is open. Gas should come out like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If it does, you have plenty of fuel. If it doesn't, check the "secret filter" in the carb fuel inlet elbow and the filter in the sediment bowl.If those are clean, there is a screen on the tank valve and that will require you drain the tank via a siphon or blow back through the fuel line with compressed air to temporarily unclog it. These old machines are notorius for filthy and rusted fuel tanks. Hope this helps.

Jim:

When you statically timed the ignition, did you make sure that the #1 cylinder was on the compression stroke? Remember the engine fires each cylinder after two rotations of the crankshaft so it is posible to time it on the exhaust stroke, which is a no no.
