Hi, I have a 1972 MF185 (perkins 248 D) It is 12 Volt - Earth, and has been converted from the original generator to an alternator. My question is as follows. I have just bought a new Ammeter for the tractor, as it didnt have one when i acquired it. The Ammeter has a + and a - terminal on it. Where do i run wires from each of these terminals to to make it operate properly? Please be very specific for me. :)

Thanks, Jim!

Jim There are a few good articles in the archive of articles in the column at the left that cover many of the aspects of electrical systems.

Jim;
Here is a URL that has some wiring diagrams. They are not for your exact tractor but they may still help. Good luck.

ps Sorry I couldn't figure out how to get this URL so that you could just click on it...

Hello, Jim -

Don't have a diagram for yours, but the general set-up is a main feed line - fairly heavy wire (10 or 12 gauge) - from the hot terminal on the starter solenoid to the dash.

All power flows through this to/from the battery except the starter motor, and the ammeter inserted in this line will tell you what's happening. There will be a terminal for this line somewhere under the panel - probably on the starter switch.

Lifting the wire from this terminal, hooking it to the ammeter, and running a similar gauge jumper wire from the other ammeter terminal to the original point will get you into operation. If the ammeter reads charge when you turn the lights on (engine off) reverse the connections on the ammeter.

There might be a snag if the alternator output goes directly to the starter solenoid. If so, you'll need to extend this wire to the ammeter terminal on which you connected the jumper.

Have you considered a voltmeter rather than an ammeter?

It gives you a similar indication of positive charging, and installation is simpler. It requires no rewiring - just a connection to any point under the dash which is live when running, and a ground or earth. If it stays on when the engine is shut down, it can discharge the battery over a period of months.

Hope this helps.

Just to add a bit, I ran my volt meter through the oil pressure switch, so that it doesn't read unless there is oil pressure present, (It cured the dead battery problem).

Chip;
Would you please explain how you did that? Thanks. Roger

Sure, I ran one leg of the voltmeters line over to the terminal on the back of the oil pressure gauge, then ran another leg from the second terminal of the oil pressure gauge back to the voltmeter. My voltmeter reads zero until I lite off and get enough oil pressure to close the switch. I'm running a one wire alternator.
