Lift Question

I got my new (to me) TO35 diesel last night and was tinkering with it this morning. I hooked my brush hog to it and proceeded to mow. It started scalping a bit and I noticed it wouldn't go up very high and when it does lift, it's a wee bit jerky. It lifts by way of a hydraulic lever, not the lever on the right (position/draft)..that seems to do nothing. The gentleman who sold it to me has always put 80 weight in it and I was wondering, maybe that's wrong? The filler plug says 80w in winter, and 90w in summer. He's alwasy pulled a gang mower with it on a draw bar, so I guess it was never an issue for him.

Any thoughts?

Thanks guys for your responses. I'm sorry it took so long to reply back, but my computer has some problems and I'm using my old one until I can get the new one fixed. I'm going to take a long look this week and see what I can come up with. BTW, I don't have a repair manual for the '35 yet, but I do have one for a TO30.. Are the hydraulic systems similiar?

Usually what causes Lift to jerk is the valves in the pump or if it has a pimp with piston rings if the rings are broke it will cause that or if yours has a filter it could be partially plugged the late pump in the MF35 did have. Both of these. Another thing that will sometimes cause this is a loose master control. If the remote valve has been used instead of using the quadrant controls it is very common for the pump control valve to stick. The remote valve is the one from Massey Ferguson if is single spool the for the quadrant levers to work lever of the remote valve has to be locked or tied back. If it is one of the two spool valves then the remote valve left lever has to be locked or tied back for the quadrant levers to work. That is provide the pump control valve is not stuck. Dont know what kind of hydraulic lever you have there, but you should be using the position control lever to lift. If the hydraulic is jerking, it could be lack of oil, (check the dipstick) or the pump isnt working on all cylinders. If you want to know how to operate the hydraulics correctly email me at fergusontractors at hotmail dot com and ask me for the instructions for the 35 hydraulic system.
