I have a TE-20; the PTO shaft and one axle seal is leaking oil, are these very hard to change? Also the manual said to use mineral oil in the hydraulic/transmission/differential, I can not by mineral oil, can anyone tell me what oil to use?
Thanks
Jerry

The sure seals work great, have them in both rear axel's on my TE-20. They install on the inside of the axel, so don't forget, you must clean the bearings and pack them full of wheel bearing grease before installing the sure seal. Also most Massey dealers still carry mineral oil if you have one nearby. Pete

Some of the guys on here seem to buy their Mineral oil from Walmart. "Sure seals" will save you a lot of problems with that oil seal on the axle shaft.

The only oil recommended for this system is a straight mineral oil 80W (straight = NO DETERGENT) if you use any oil that contains a detergent it will have a scouring effect on the inside of the housings and foreign matter will be carried around the system in the oil, it will pass through the pump causing damage. The oil will allow a sludge to form and trap any foreign matter in it, you will appreciate that when this tractor was made there were no suitable filters that could be fitted to this system the design dates back to middle 30's so that is why you need the correct oil, doesn't matter what the oil men say, they only want to sell oil we want to preserve your tractor, the choice of course is yours.

John, -FYI

It was true that GL-1 was available from the Wal-marts here in the US, however, their supplier, Quaker state discontinued production of that product earlier this year. GL-5 and R&O oil are the only Hydrolic oils available there now. And neither is 1st choice for this system. R&O is NOT recommended.

Thanks for that information Jeff, so what do you recommend that is now still available in US and possibly Canada.

John,

I recommend the use of straight 90 wt. Minerial Oil (i.e. GL-1 rating) 90 wt summer 80 wt winter, though I have not seen 80 wt.

The GL-1 oil is available from several sources...

Massey Ferguson Dealers PN MF-1103 and goes for ~$37US / 5 gallon
Shell DENTAX GL1 oil- available from a shell oil distributer (see local phone book) also goes for ~ $36US / 5 gallon.
Another source is NAPA auto parts stores. PN 65-205 goes for ~$27 / 5 gallon this is a special order item from the whare house and takes a day or two to get it. (at least here in Cincinnati)

Lastly if you are near Latham Ohio you can get GL1 oil from the Latham auto parts store for $17.99 / 5 gallon.

You can also get the FORD Transmission oil from TSC though this is reporttedly a GL-3 oil.

Just don't waste your time at the surburban auto stroes like PEP-boys, AutoZone, etc. They don't know squat about tractors and look at you funny when you finally admit what your looking for.

Can you tell me why coastal R&0 is not recomended.I took the advice of a local parts house and used it in my T0-20.Everything seems to be working fine, working 100% better than before I changed the fluid, pto works great and hydrolics are very strong!Just wondering what to do now, change the fluid again or leave it alone..
Jim

Did the local parts house realize you were talking about a combo transmission and hyrdaulic system. R&O is a hydraulic oil. The R&O stand for Rust and Oxidation additives that are put into the system. The concern is hydraulic oil does not have the pressure capability required to work properly in the transmission side. although the hydraulic side should work better.

Theses systems require a balanced oil to do the two jobs.

You may not be in immediate danger of doing damage to the transmission but I would suggest you revisit the parts shop, and research this site to verify that you do or do not need to change the fluid out. Check out the link on oils by llamas.

Yes, These are easy to take care of.

Couple of questions first.
Are you going to change out the trandmission oil or reuse it?
Does the oil have water in it?
Where are you located? US, UK, Austrailia, etc...
Do you have any problems with the hydrolics... i.e. leak down etc.

These questions will help to determine where to direct you. And also while you have the backend drained it is a good time to fix a lot of thoes little problems.

1st: To replace the PTO oil seal. All you do is drain the system, then remove the 4 nuts around the PTO. This allows the retaining plate to be removed. Then the PTO it pulled out. It can take a little effort. If it is big effort some twisting in the PTO could have occured. Check back if that is the case.

Once out the PTO seal retainer should just slip off. Remove the "O" ring and drive the inner seal out. Get a new seal ~$13US from a full line Massey Dealer & $1US for the "O"ring.

The new seal is put in then drive it flush with a piece of wood. The seat it in the retainer. I used a PVC coupler and a vice. The PVC coupler was thick enough to catch the edge of the seal.

For the axel seal I have heard of a product called sure seal. Search the archives, here and on the N board. The process has been described a few times.

Mineral oil in Petrolium oil as opposed to vegitable oils etc. What you want is 90 wt. GL-1 Gear Lube. This is sold under many brands.

Massy number is 1103 and is ~$38US/5 gallon
Shell Oil produces "Dentax" at ~$36US/5 gallons
NAPA sells it for ~$26 /5 gallon Part Number ????
I have to get back with that.

If in the US look in the phone book for oil distributers... They will have or can get the Shell brand stuff. You are right Auto parts chain stores are helpless here. Particularly PEPBoys Just terrible.

There is a water clean-out peocedure if needed.
Jeff
