TO30 BURNT VALVE

Well I finally got my new TO30 up and running after flushing the hydralics and rewiring to convert to a alternator, but after my first hard day of running, pulling a cultivator it seems I have burned a valve in the #4 cylinder. At least that is what my ole mechanic buddy told me. It just isn't running good enough on 3 cyl to keep working it. So I am going to pull the head and take it in for a OH... anything I should look for in specific that may have caused this problem. I was told this engine had a rebuilt short block when I bought it, but not the head.

I agree with John (UK). One of the sources for a lean mixture (besides a bad adjusmnet of the power jet) is a leaky gasket where the carb attaches to the manifold or a leak in the intake manifold. Take a look at your spark plug on the cylinder with the burned valve. Does it look burned too?

Check carb settings, could have been running too weak for the work and overheating, or a valve clearance a bit tight.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice... this turned out to be a false alarm. Last night I took the valve cover off and discovered that the cap on top of the offended valve had fallen off. My old mechanic buddy told me that he thought my valves might need adjusting when I bought this critter... turns out he was right. Tonight I will reassemble it and adjust the valves per the service manual instructions. This was a great find for me, I really wanted to finish and re-seed our yard before the end of fall and wait till winter to clean & work on the tractor more.
