I am in need of a tractor for light use. Mostly grading driveway and some occasional bushogging. I am looking a tractor that I am told is 1953 Massey Ferguson. All over the casing is says TO **** in a box the initials HF. The tractor runs and appears to have a new style alternator on it. I checked the dipstick in the rear end and it is milky white after running for a while. The radiator has a small leak at the top under the support bracket.

Some things I did not understand is the 3 point. It will only raise when the pto is engaged and will drop when the clutch is depressed. In addition it can barely lift the bush hog attached to it.

As far as fluids go I am still lost on a few points. How many diffeernt fluids go into this thing. Is there and engine oil, then a gear box oil then a pto fluid? Or is the transmission gearbox and pto all the same?

Any help getting me started would be appreciated. I assure you that I will continue to read as much as I can. But...there is a lot of reading to do here and it may take me weeks to complete what I need to be sure I know what to check before buying this tractor....

The hydraulics, transmission, and differential all share the same fluid, which sounds like it has water in it - a common occurrence.
These tractors do not have "live pto" - the hydraulic pump is operated by the pto shaft so when you shut off the pto, no hydraulics. Often after half a century the hydraulics aren't what they used to be and this is what you are seeing when you step on the clutch. If the system was tight the implement wouldn't drop, or more realistically would only drop very slowly. The one you're looking at will need something renewed; typically the rings on the piston that is pushed by the hydraulic fluid, or the cylinder it's in, needs help. Not rocket science to repair but it takes some time and sweat. This is perhaps a good bargaining point.
Regards,
Jim
PS It is just a "Ferguson".

the 3 point and pto run off the same shaft and when one works both work. the 3 point should NOT drop when you push the clutch in and should lift the hog with ease sound like it has a big leak in side. only 2 oils in the thing engine and trans hyd. . trans and hyd use the same oil and share it should be minneral oil M1103 from massey or GL-1 from out sorce NOT GL-5. as to milky is a signe off water in oil but mineral oil is a little milky looking from new on

Thanks for the input. The tag under the steering colum is to painted over to read. The motor number on the block is Z120AB00???

It appears to run fair and started easily. The right side axel is leaking and has leaked on the breaking machanism. The fenders and hood are functional but are dented and surface rusted in most area. No cancer that I can find. The battery and alternator seem to be a 12 volt system. Other than the right axel the only other possible leak is the steering gear box shows ome sign of past leakage but none currently. I am not sure of the name of this part .... The left front spindle which turns holds the wheel onto the front axel is worn allowing the tire to camber slightly inwards toward the linkage. When I pull on it I can cause it to back away from the linkage. I assume there is a bushing worn at the top. The right wheel looks to be firm and in place. There is a linkage rod which passes through near the front of the transmission. I do not completely rememember if it is to the brakes or the steering??? It does not appear to pass through the fluid side but more to the bell housing side. It rattle and has play as though it is missing a bushig as well. The fuel tank badly dented and shows signs of many repairs. All of the tires are in good shape except the one front left. It is seperating right across its width almost like a seam came apart. Other than that the rest are not dry rotted and have 80% or more tread.

The asking price from the seller is with bush hog attachment is 1000.00 US I have done a lot of reading and am not sure which way to go. I can build or fix anything I come into contact with. I do not fear the work... Its just that I have to many projects I have bought with the intentions of one day completing...grin

Any suggestions as to value (price) or cost of repairs expected would be appreciated. I have been pricing tractors and came to realize that they are quite expensive even fifty year old ones?????

Brian,

At $1000.00 us with bush hog you are getting a very good price. Get it.

The bush hog alone will easily fetch $200 to $300 used. New ones are $600-$800. Based on the engine SN "Z120" it is a TO-20. This is a great sound tractor for the jobs you describe.

In nice Paint, perfect condition they can bring $2500 to $3500.

Visit this website to learn about purchasing a used Ferguson tractor, and what to look for before buying. All the things you mentioned are repairable using a Harry Ferguson owners manual and shop manual. Parts are widely available from MF dealers, numerous websites, and most tractor/farm stores.
