Opinions on a TO35 Diesel

Hi all,
I'm looking at a TO35 with a standard diesel. He claims the engine was rebuilt in 1999 and he just had the whole front end overhauled... Sheetmetal looks good, front tires are bald and the rear tires are about 75% (turf tires). I didn't pay attention to see if it was a Deluxe
Here in Oakdale is a Hershey's candy plant with large lawn areas. He had the mowing contract there and used the tractor to pull a gang mower. To start it, he puts just a tiny shot of ether in the carb and it fires right up. It smokes for about 30 seconds, and then it clears right up and runs smooth. It ran for about ten minutes and oil pressure stayed around 45-50 lbs. Temp guage barely registered. The 3 point is raised by a hydraulic valve, not the normal lever. There are actually two valves, the other going to a pair of external hoses. He's never tried the hoses.
He wants $3250 and seems pretty firm.
So, whattaya think?

Well,
I thank you for your responses. Regarding the ether, when I say a tiny shot, I mean as quick as you can depress the button and then take your finger off. He seems like a gentleman and since he retired, just has no use for the old girl. I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

Thanks again,
Chuck (CA)

If it needs ether in a petrol carb after a rebuild, I'd look again. If you meant it just needs a whiff of ether in the intake to start the old Standard diesel, don't worry too much.

Have a MF 35 so we're pretty close. Only bad thing I have heard is the Standard Diesel is a poor starter. If you are in a temperate zone of sorts, that may not be a problem.

Little snort of ether to start may be ok considering the Standard. Otherwise it could mean low compression (but you just had an overhaul).

The initial smoke is usually the combustion chamber coming up to temp and some initial incomplete combustion. Wouldn't worry about that at all.

If you want to use the lift, it is good to know it works. Lift problems (excluding pump) are not that difficult and not that expensive.

Front tires go for $40 around here, new. No biggie. You said nothing about paint but a $100 worth of paint and a days work would fix that.

From what you've told me it's a go. Price seems right. Mark

Hello Chuck -

The 4 cyl Standard is one tough engine - once you get it running. Ours had probably 5000 hours on it when I overhauled it, and the crank was still standard size.

The overhaul did not cure the starting problem. It took heat - a 200 watt or so in-line coolant heater installed in the lower rad hose. 15 minutes in the summer, an hour in winter, and it lit off just like the Perkins. It smoked until the temp came up. You may find the thermostat is a bit lazy and needs replacement.

With the 3 point control valve, if it's like ours, the left lever is a switch valve (center position is remote, held back gives normal 3 point operation) and the right lever controls the remotes. You lose the position control feature (holding the lift arms and implement at the height you want, automatically) when you use the valve bank lever for 3 point control.

You won't find a better tractor for the money - anywhere. And parts are all available at extremely favourable prices from aftermarket suppliers (occasionally even from MF! - they had sleeve kits for the Standard a while back cheaper than aftermarket, in their Classic program).

I think our hosts at YT are dealers for Vapormatic (UK) and other parts. You also have a Bareco (Australian) distribution warehouse in CA.

Prices are good because there are so many still around, worldwide, nearly 50 years after they started coming off the production line. That's a real tribute to the durability and reliability of the design.

Thank you, Jack, for your words of encouragment. I'm going to test drive and check it out more thouroughly tomorrow.
As far as temps go, in this area of California, winter temperature rarely gets below the 40's. I don't know if the in-line heater is worth the effort, but I'll check into it a bit more.
Gee, I'm kind of excited. My last tractor, (A TO-30) gave up about 2 or 3 years ago, and I've been suffering from withdrawals now for quite awhile.
