TE30 - Positive ground wire melted

I have owned a TE30 for a short time. Today it was hard to start and battery acted low. The second time I tried to start it the positive ground terminal melted down at the battery post. What would cause this? and is this battery hooked to charger as positive to positive?. Much appreciated any advice!

Just a thought Ed,

You may have a high resistance internal short inside the battery, just below the terminal post, just where you can't see it, this would cause local extreme temperatures at the fault under heavy current conditions, and also give 'poor battery' type symptoms.

If you can, try a different battery, to the same connections just briefly to see if you get anything like the same heating.

You have a severe short. Somehow negative is getting to ground. You don't say, but I think we are all assuming you have a 6 volt system, since you say it is positive ground. Check all connections. Check starter switch. Check especially the ground connection on the tractor. Is it grounded to the dash, or to the block (better)? You can check the starter operation by hooking another battery, 12 volt is fine, directly to the starter, one side hooked to top post on starter, and just touch the other connection to a ground on the block, to see if the starter spins good. But be sure the tractor is out of gear, as it will start and run over you if the key is on and if it is in gear. The starter itself doesn't care which voltage and doesn't really care whether it is pos or neg ground. Of course it will spin faster with 12 volts, but that's all.

I would pull your starter and have it checked
out, sounds like the armature is shorted out.

The battery is always hooked to the charger, positive to positve and negative to negative. Is your starter still operatable? Could be a major short in the starter.

Starter still works, but barely turns, feels like battery almost dead, even though it is new. First start the positive ground wire smoked a little. Second time after holding starter button down the lead connector to post melted.

If you have a shorted starter, both battery cables would be overloaded, and begin to overheat (assuming equal-sized cables in good condition).

MOST of the time, when only one connection heats up, that is indicative of a high resistance connection right there, at the source of the heat. Your battery cable may have had corrosion inside the lead connector, between the lead and the copper wire.

At the very least, one connection heating up shows a poor connection that needs to be repaired, even if there is another problem, also.

I would replace the battery cable, and at least temporarily substitute another battery. If the slow cranking problem continues, then you'll need to get the starter repaired.
