I have a to20 with a to30 engine and was bushogging using a zane thang. I was about to come in when I looked back and my bushog was on the ground. I took the pto off and tried to lift it but had to drag it back to the barn. It won't work at all now and I have no idea why or what to do to check it out and fix it. Any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated. ldt

Hi Larry, It sounds just like the problem I had. The control valve has a T on it that fits into the control arms coming down from the control lever. The easiest way to reach this is to remove the dip stick plate from the right side of the PTO housing and reach into the bottom. you have to do part of the work by feel, but the control arms jumped off the T. There is one arm on each side of the PTO shaft. These were easy to get back on and it fixed the problem. John from UK sent me a bunch of info on the adjustments. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I sent them on. If you want them let me know your email address and I'll send them.

I know just enough about the rear end to be dangerous.... I copied this stuff below from one of my favorite sites, John Smith's 8N site. Yes it is a Ford N site, but the hydraulics are the same, and it is an excellent site! Q. "My lift isn't working at all." A. If the lift won't raise at all, first make sure the pto is engaged and the pto shaft is turning as it should be. Make sure the oil level isn't low. If those two things check out ok turn off the engine and remove the right side access cover (the one with the dipstick) and slide your hand down along the control rod into the oil and feel the end of the rod where it goes into the control valve pivot. Make sure the rod is connected and that it is moving the control valve spools in and out as you move the lift control lever up and down. Other possibilities are a defective relief valve or a ruptured oil tube that goes from the pump base to the top cover. To check these, leave the side cover off and start the tractor. Have a fairly heavy weight or load on the lift arms. Raise the lift control lever and watch inside the cavity for oil spraying out in the area of the relief valve or from the side of the cavity where the tube is located. If no oil is spraying out anywhere, you could have a bad pump.

That makes sense gshadel. I know that the pto works but the hydrolics does not. The test seems simple enough to do even for me. If the pump is bad then I need some hints on doing that. I purchased a manual so I'm apt to be very dangerous also. Thanks for the help. Phil in va also I want to thank and am open to more suggestions if needed. Larry in Ohio

This is probably too simplistic, but did your PTO pop out of gear and stop turning? Since you were headed to the barn, I'm thinking maybe you weren't cutting anymore and you didn't notice it wasn't turning...? If so, of course the lift won't work on the 20 or 30.

The shaft was still turning and cutting (quite close to the ground I might add.
