I thinking of buying a TO 20 that has a crack in the block or a bad head gasket. What is the experence of other owner's with this problem? Also with this tractor sitting for 10 years what can it be worth? Thanks Den

I just rebuilt a TO-30. It had o-rings at the bottom of cylinder liners.. These o-rings seperate oil from water in the engine. If so a fairly easy repair..

A non-running tractor, sitting 10 years, with unknown problems... should be a bargain, depends on your area what a bargain goes for, around here (Central Ohio) wouldn't give more than $500 for it if the rubber is still 1/2 decent.
Hard to tell on the head gasket or crack until you get into it, both are common, especially for machines abandoned to Mother Nature for several Winters. Cracked blocks are usually not show stoppers, might need pinned,welded or brazed, good machine shops have seen it/done it, might cost $200 to fix, minor cracks might just need some JB Weld or stopleak.
If your looking for a "project" tractor, and realize you probably won't get your money back out of her if you fix her up real nice and sell her.... get it and enjoy it.

Dennis, oil in water is almost always a head gasket, whereas water in oil is more difficult to diagnose. I'm not saying you might not still have a cracked block. As for worth...It's all in the eyes of the beholder. If you're looking for a long term project in conjunction with a money pit, they're great little tractors. Good luck, have fun!!
