I am attempting to trouble shoot a problem for a friend of mine who is 400 miles away. He has a TO 20 and the points keep getting soaked with oil after running for about 3 minutes. This is shorting out the points and killing the engine. He says the blow up picture he has does not show any seal on the distributer shaft. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Well I just talked to my friend and he says he has some side to side movement on the distributer shaft. He is ordering a new one . thanks for your help !

Just a thought...make sure the vent pipe coming out of the valve cover is clear. If its clogged, the crankcase will be under more pressure than usual and push oil out where it might not normally go.

Sounds like the bearings are getting worn in that distributor and the engine may have a little bit of piston blow-by which won't help. try moving the shaft in the distributor from side to side....any movement at all and it's the bearings. If you cant get hold of a distributor you could always convert to electronic ignition which will do away with the points altogether

Good point John (UK), but I have a feeling the sensors on electronic ignition are optically based and use a sort of spiked rotor on the shaft to interrupt a beam at the right time - so if there is that much oil sloshing around, then there may not be a long term improvement before degradation sets in.

Dunno, I could be wrong - its a while since I looked at any modern electronic ignition, and my description above could be way off by now :)

Just a thought.
