The starter gets wired directly to the battery.

For a positive ground system, the positive terminal of the ammeter goes to the negative battery post, generally at the starter. All electrical loads (ignition, lights, accessories) and the charging line go to the negative ammeter post. All loads have their own switches, but the charging line depends on the cutout or the voltage regulator for automatic disconnect when the engine is not running.

Do you have a TO-30 with a six volt generator system with a positive ground, or has it been converted to 12 v with a negative ground? Regardless, it sounds as if the ammeter is hooked up backward if when you're starting up it shows a positive charging rate. I need more info to give you more help.

Current for the starter should not flow through the ammeter, regardless of polarity.
The ammeter is supposed to be in series between the output of the generator or alternator, and the battery.

Jim, If I look at the wiring diagram for my TO-30, it seems to be that the ignition current and any field current to the generator will register in the discharge direction on the ammeter when I try to start. Am I misreading the wiring diagram?

I think that's right but I am having trouble imagining it; can you send me the diagram?
jim dot wallace at netscape dot com
(New email for me by the way, for anyone who corresponds).
Once I see it, it will make sense to me.
Thanks,
Jim

I don't have a way to email you the wiring diagra, Jim. No scanner or fax. I'll try to describe.

Battery to starter switch to ammeter to BAT terminal on VR (voltage regulator). Key swich connected to Load terminal on VR and then to ignition primary circuit. Generator field connected to Field on VR. Don't know if this makes sense to you.

According to the Ferguson Manual,:

Disconect the black wire with the yellow stripe from the starter switch and also the black wire with the yellow traces fron the bat terminal of the regulator. Tape the ends of this wire.

From the BAT terminal of the regulator, run a 12 gauge wire up to a terminal on the ammeter. From the other terminal of the ammeter run another 12 gauge wire to the hot side of the starter switch.

To determine if the ammeter is installed correctly, start the engine and open the throttle to until a definite delection is noted. If the ammeter reads in the discharge direction , reverse the leads on the ammeter terminals.

Hope this helps.
