on the Standard Motors 23c Diesel engine in the to35 ferguson tractor I just purchased there is a sticker that says the intakes valves clearance is .012 and the exhaust valves are at .008. isn't this backwards? My IT manual also says .012 intake and .008 exhaust. all the mechanics that I have talked to have said that the intake should be set to .008 and the exhaust to .012. My concern is if the engine and IT manual state this there must be a reason. if set at .008 intake and .012 exhaust would this cause clearance problems with the pistons? "Whats the correct setting?" Thanks

I have it as inlet .012" exhaust .008". there is a cap on the exhaust valve to make it rotate and this is the reason why its .008". If you look on the right hand side of the valve cover you should find a plate rivetted to it that gives you the valve clearances for your engine so its no mistake what they say.

John, Thank you for responding. Forgive my ignorance but this cap you speak of, is it similar to a intake valve seal? I did find hard baked rubber seals on the exhaust valves and thought it was a mistake by whomever had previoiusly removed the head. they had reused the head gasket, which is a no-no. and I thought they just did not know what they were doing and put the seals in the wrong place. maybe I'm the uniformed one. Are there valve seals on both the intake and exhaust valves?

The cap fits on the end of the valve stem, it actually drops on to the top of the stem in the middle of the valve spring when everything is built up, just before you fit the rocker shaft. It allows the valve to turn without the rocker holding it in a set position which prevents the valve and seat from possibly burning. Now the valve seals, from memory and looking at the parts list I have, there are no seals shown and I am pretty sure that no seals were ever fitted, if you can get seals that fit and don"t prevent the valves from fully opening without the seals being compressed under the valve cap, it will be ok to use them if you wish.Use them on both inlet and exhaust if you want to, but they arenot necessary unless you have wear on valve guides.
