I have two fergusons, one i have identedified as a '49 TE model with the tag.
My other has no tag, it carries chrome badges, my other does not, what looks to be an oil filter assy on the left side, my other does not, different oil pan, a filler neck near the rear of the engine vs. front on my TE, a number 135035E stamped, not cast, into the block next to the coil, my other has a plate.
I cannot seem to find the cast engine number on the block like I did on my '49.
Any ideas??

Thanks Kev

Yes... It sounds like you have a '49 TE-20 (you identified) and a TEA-20. (the one not identified).

The TEA-20 and the TE-20 are similar but very different tractors. They are similar because they were built with nearly all common parts and on the same assembly line... However they are different in that the TEA has a Standard Motor, while the TE has a Continental Motor.

The TE's were built as soon as Harry got his assembly line started. He could not get motors, so he imported continental Z120 motors from the US. The TE-20 tractors were then exported to the US market, until the Detroit assembly plant was on-line and it produced the TO-20 line. Once the standard motor company got its motor assembly line cranked up to supply Harry, the Continentals were replaced by Standard Motors TE-20 production stopped and TEA-20 production started. TEA-20's were exported to Canada, while TO-20's supplied the US.

Parts for the TEA are slightly harder to get in the US than the TE.

Hey John, I'm pretty sure my unidentified tractor had a zenith carb on it. Is one engine better than the other, or harder to get pars for here in Canada.

Is there an e-mail address i could reach you at?

Thanks Kev

If it had a Zenith carb it was a Standard Engine 80mm or 85 mm Well I am bound to say the Standard engine is better....but truthfully I think both engines are good, there are so many Continentals out in US that they must be ok or they wouldnt have carried on using them. Only reason we stopped using Standard Engines here was the price of fuel, we went all diesel a long time ago.Although they did export a lot of the Standard carb type to Europe and Australia too. A lot of parts are available now from this site here and from Sparex dealers, they do a very good range for the TEA You can reach me at scorpio29 at lineone dot com or fergusontractors at hotmail dot com I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks John, naturally my next question, is there any markings or concrete way to tell wether this engine is an 80 or an 85 without actually measuring bores?
I just want to make triple sure of what i ve got before i drop 100 bucks on a manual for a TEA, which seem to be somewhat more expensive than the rest!

Thanks Kev

Do you have the engine number, its on the cylinder block between the coil and the distributor. We should be able to tell from that.

Jeff,

Thanks for the link, great addition to my "Favorites" Tractor Folder...unfortunately, if appears they don't have manuals for the TEA-20, got any other sources?

Thanks,

George H

48,000 was the LAST TE20 they produced the TE and TEA side by side for about 12 months.First TEA was Sept 47, last TE was July 48. I was thinking the same as you about that number he posted but I thought I would try and make sure. If that is the number it"s an 85mm engine S120,510 was the first, engine numbers listed are a bit vague for some reason and they changed numbering system part way through the run. Check the water pump, if its on the head its an 85mm, on the block its 80mm. I think you should make sure about that number though, it should be stamped in the block next to the coil, not cast in it.

I'm haulin the beast home on Sunday night, so I'll get you all the right info. then, I can recall seeing an '85' in large cast into the block on the right hand side.
Not sure if this is indicative of whats inside.
Talk to ya Sunday!

That number is your engine number it will be prefixed by "S" and it isnt a TE its a TEA and so is your other one if it is a 49 they finished TE's in 1948. Do they both have same engine to look at. If the other one has a different engine it could then be a TE with a Continental engine but it wont be a 49 it will be earlier. Any number that is cast into a block is a part number not a serial number, same applies to any other part of you tractor too. Serial numbers have to be stamped in.

I yield to John on the TE production year. Based on your description I think the first is a TE-20. Provide the SN and look at the left side of the engine if Z120 is cast into the block then it is a continental motor

On the tractor that i have the plate for, it has TE 85625, i have idented this tractor with the z120 on the block.
My other tractor has a different configured engine as i mention in my first post, as well this tractor has 'ferguson' emlbems on each side of the hood whereas my other does not.
When did they start using emblems?

thats a 1949 serial number but the TE20 was not made after serial # 48,000 and that was in 1948 I don't know when they started using the Ferguson emblem on the side of the hood, we never had them over here, it's something they must have fitted once they got to US I think, I never saw them around the factory here anyway. Some one will have the information and they will give it to you when they read this. Serial # for 1949 were 77773 - 116461
