Hi,
Does anyone have advice they could give me on the use of a PTO generator and my TO-30? I was thinking of a 10kw. Does my TO-30 have enough umph to run it? Could anyone share with me their experiences both good and bad? Thanks for your replies.

Kenton, From what I've researched, a generator needs about 1 HP for every 500 continuous watts of output. You should be aware that most manufacturers (over)rate their generators at surge power not continuous. You need to determine your power needs and pick a continuous rating. Note, electric motors require about 3 times the current draw to start-up and this should be figured into the selection process. Here's a link from Northern on a PTO driven gen.

Hope this helps.

I had an old diesel genset - 5hp handled a 3kW generator no problem, so on the basis that you 'need' 5hp for 3kW, then you should have no problem with 10kW off a 29hp tractor - and have some hp left over for when the load increases.

On the basis that the PTO runs up to 540 rpm, then you would need to check what rpm your genny would need to run at to get your rated power output - some PTO generators are geared up to spin the set faster than PTO speed, and this will also affect tractor load because for the gearing.

Hope this helps.

Kenton;

Your TO-30 will make 540 pto rpm rather easy. You should make sure the engine throttle will stay where you set it. You need to put a tach on the pto to find the 540 setting.
