Robert, what you are referring to as a T0-40 is in reality a Ferguson F-40. It is a much better tractor than your TO-30. I have both and I can speak from personal experience. It's greatest value is that it has a high=low transmission, giving it six forward and two reverse speeds. Most of them had two-stage clutches so that when you despress the clutch part way, it only stops the tractor, not the PTO. When you push the clutch all the way down, it stops the PTO also. It also has fuill-time hydraulics so that when you depress the clutch, the hydraulics continue to function.

As to what to look out for: the same things you would look out for on a TO-30: do the hydraulics work reasonably well? What condition is the engine in? How good is the rubbher? Is there evidence of engine coolant in the crankcase? (could indicated a leaky head gasket or a cracked clock). Does the two-stage clutch work properly?

Basically, the F-40 is a modified TO-35 with a diffrerent front end and sheet metal. It also came in high-crop models.

Hope this information helps.

Best wishes to you.

I have a F-40. I noticed that gear oil was leaking just a bit from the small drip hole on the underside of the tractor. The problem was that this occured after a heavy rain and the oil was milky in color, which I assume meant it was mixed with water. I am hoping that it got in from leaking around the gear shift levers instead of coming from inside the block. I did drain and refill with new gear oil, however, it still has a milky color to it. Could this be because all the water didn't drain when I drained the oil? If so, how can I get the residual water out? Also, when I looked under the tractor I noticed a rectanguler opening that allows access to the gear box. It seems as if a plate is missing. There are 4 bolt holes around this opening. Do I need to construct my on cover plate or is there somewhere I can purchase one?
