TO 30 Flywheel/Starter Problem

I need to split my TO-30 to take a look at my flywheel. It appears that the ring gear has pushed back a bit over time and my bendix no longer reaches the gear. Can an amateur pull this tractor apart and get it back together? The main thing I am worried about is getting the shaft pushed back in after I have done whatever I need to do on the flywheel. I have seen some mentions of a clutch tool to realign the gears????
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

You can split your tractor pretty easy. When I split mine, I used a rolling jack under the engine. Had the tranny on jack stands, just pulled her right apart. Going back together I rented an engine hoist for a few hours. Made the job real easy putting together.
Some Auto Parts stores rent or loan the clutch alignment tool . You only actually need to alignment tool when you bolt the clutch down on the flywheel... about a 30 minute job. Being the cheap guy that I am, I made a clutch alignment tool using several sockets and extensions.
Might have to wiggle the input shaft going into the tranny to line-up the splined shaft with the clutch, make sure the engine is angled straight, and it will slide right back on.

I agree get a manual, alot of good info. If you are patient, it is no problem getting it back together. While your in there, check out the clutch, pilot and thrust bearings and check the transmission seal for leaks, it can save you having to do it again. Good luck.

I have first hand experience with this problem. If you don't have a shop manual, get one before you take the tractor apart. It is not a tough job, but the manual gives you a lot of info that is helpful. Before you pull the two halves apart, you'll need to place a 2 x 4 block between the engine block and the front axle support, otherwise the engine will pivot about the front axle support pin. Regarding the ring gear, the initial design of the flywheel/ring gear was a mistake. Every time you start up, the starter drive gear hits the end of the ring gear and it eventually can push it off the flywheel. Many people tried to repair it by tack welding the ring gear to the flywheel. It probably can be done but you have to know what your doing to weld on white cast iron. (Whoever tried it on my flywheel didn't do it right!) The factory made a design change Instead of sweating the ring gear on from the back, they machined a small lip on the back of the flywheel and sweated the ring gear on from the front. It's virtually impossible to knock the ring gear off the modified design. When I had the problem, I bought the redesigned flywheel/ring gear combination from a salvage yard.
As John said, a clutch pilot tool (about $10 at Harbor Freight Tools), aligns the clutch disc/presure plate assembly. Getting the transmission input shaft into the clutch assembly and pilot hole in the flywheel is not hard. It just takes a little bit of patience. When you split the two halves, you own need to movem apart a fdew inches to get the working clearance you need to do get the job done. After you are done, line everything up and push the halves together gently. It make take a few tries buttake your time and be patient. It ain't rocket science! The clutch tool is to align the clutch plate on to the centre of the flywheel, so that the main drive shaft into the transmission will go into it. Yes an amateur can do this with a bit of thought.Dont take chances make sure its well supported when you try to pull it apart. make sure you are on a hard level floor. The ring gear coming off the flywheel, it has been known to happen before. It needs to be heated before you shrink it on the flywheel, its possible someone didn't do that so it will come off in time.
