After using my TO-20 along with a 5' finish mower today for about one and a half hours all was well, I shut down for about an hour then resumed my mowing, after about twenty minutes or so it seems that my tractor began to overheat, couldnt tell why or for sure so I researched the archives of this site and found many culprits (thermostat, water pump etc.) so I let the engine cool back down and I started it and with a careful eye I watched the coolant in the radiator to see if there was any movement and after a few minutes there was so I am assuming that at least my water pump is still operational and possibly my t-stat but there was steam coming from the front of the radiator about half way down so I was going to blow it out with the water air mix and maybe flush it with vinegar but if the steam is escaping through the front wouldnt that mean that my radiator has a small hole in it even though the coolant level doesnt seem to change any. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Your TO20 radiator probably has a overflow/relief tube coming out of the radiator cap, running down the side of the radiator a little ways. Was the steam coming right out of the core in the middle? that probably means hole in the core. Or was the steam maybe coming from the side relief tube? That could be simply a bad cap. The cap should hold ~3 psi, I think, before venting thru that relief line. Overfilling the radiator can cause some venting too.
If you see good flow, your thermostat must be opening. If you take things apart, keep in mind that thermostat will not work if re-installed backwards(been there, done that).
Sounds like pulling the radiator, cleaning real good inside, and outside is a good move. If you are doing that, should be able to pressure check it too.
hope this helps

Just a follow up, and to help me understand, as i had begun to flush my radiator I was looking into the radiator with the cap off and the engine at an idle, and the coolant level began to rise and overflow the radiator now should I assume that this is normal for this to happen even when the cap is off, just trying to get a little understanding.

Ok after taking a look at the water pump my only question is how do you remove the pulley from the old pump.

just take the bolts off ,spray the shaft area with PB Blaster or any good penetrating oil ,then let it sit for awhile ,if its very rusted you may have to tap it gently turning it as you do ,mine was really frozen solid when i did it recently
Good luck
Danny
