I have a TO-30 tractor. I just recently rebuilt the motor and had the head rebuilt. Before the rebuild, there would be a popping noise while the tractor was idling. When I reassembled the tractor and started it for the first time, there was no popping noise, and it ran great. Not too long after that, the popping noise returned. I discovered that on one of the exhaust valves the value stem cap, which looks like a little disk with a pin underneath it, had fallen out. I put the cap back on the valve stem, checked the lash adjustment, and restarted the tractor. While watching the valve stem cap, it fell off. Sometimes it stays on there for a few minutes and other times it falls off immediately. Anyone know what's wrong? Are the valve springs weak or do I have a lobe on the cam that's bad? Could I clean the end of the valve stem real good and put the valve stem cap back on with loc-tite? Any help would be appreciated. This project has been dragging on for months.

This cap coming off is not good news, That valve must be changed. This type of engine problem is not commom. Yes,I would suspect the cam shaft being worn, once a cam profile (lobe) wears,it changes the valve action,to the point where it is like hitting the rocker arm/valve with a sledge hammer. (This might be what loosened up your wear tip) Check Cam Lift by measuring Rise of Pushrods,or Rockers next to bad valve, and then compare. Also the new replacement valve/valves will not have pressed on wear tip.(it will be built in) As a rule the Z-129-Z134 Engines are very durable and trouble free.Good Luck.
