At my camp in NH my brother in law keeps his TO 20 or 30 (can't remember which) that is generally in very good shape. However, when we run our 5 ft bushhog on the back (partly support by its own wheel at the far end), the 3 pt hitch can't seem to stay part way up, like when we on rough ground and want to avoid rocks. Either all the way up, or it slips all the way down pretty quickly. First, should it be able to maintain an intermediate height? Second, where should we start to look for the problem? Thanks.

To tell if you have a problem or not you need to do this simple test.

With the lift up, holding the mower (note: no need to pick the mower completely off the ground keep the tail wheel on the ground). Engage the clutch and shut the tractor down. How fast does the lift drop? If quickly, i.e. watch your toes fast, then you have a leak in the hydraulic or a faulty relief valve, both fixable.

If it lowers slowly, i.e. greater than right now but less than 2 minutes, then there is a leak, but you may be able to live with it for a while.

If it holds up longer than 2-5 minuets then it is normal.

In all three scenarios you should connect and adjust your mower per Marlows instructions.

Jeff

I found the drawings that you posted on the position control. I don't see the part that takes the wing nut on the drawing. Could you describe it ans how it works. thanks.

Thanks to both of you and to Marlowe! I just printed out the earlier posts and am about to leave for my camp in NH where I'm eager to try it all out.

Hi Charlie... From the sounds of it you don't have a problem. There is no position control on the old fergies, only draft control. If you'll go back several pages on this site you'll find a post by "marlowe" that will tell you step by step how to set up for your bush hog. I did it and it's great. Good luck, have fun!!
