TO-35 Standard stuck in 1st Gear

I have a '56 TO-35 Standard (single acting clutch) that is stuck in 1st gear. The high low range works (thank heavens), but 1st is stuck and will not budge. Happened yesterday while my 15 year old son was mowing, so will never know how he really managed it. Is there anything I can do to get it unstuck (short of taking the whole steering housing off)?

You don't have to go to that much trouble...just take off the oil fill cap to the left of the gear shifter and use a long like screw driver to slide the offending member back in place...and tell the son that if he shifts the gears somewhat slower it shouldn't happen again. You have to hesitate in neutral or the sliding gear assembly will keep on traveling...thats why it locks up. Fix it on level ground cause you might have to rock a rear wheel to release pressure on the gear assembly and it ain't fun if you have to try to rock it uphill. Fred OH

Is it pretty obvious when looking in the fill port what is the offending member? I haven't looked in there before. Thanks for the help!

Dave, this happens to at least one of our old Fergies once a year or so. I think it is the gear right below the filler hole, I don't think you can do much damage as long as you wind up in nuetral before you start it, So bump the obivous ones and check the gear shift. Good Luck

Had the same problem. The gear shift lever had jumped out of the place where it belonged. I pulled up the rubber grommet and knocked the pin out, then pulled the gear shift lever out, used a big screw driver to put the transmission into neutral, stuck the gear shift lever in the appropriate place and put the pin back in. Problem solved
