Tom-Tom In The Muffler?!

My '55 TO-35 Deluxe recently had some top-end work: valves cleaned, head machined, seals replaced. The mechanic also rebuilt the Carb (gas)and replaced points/Cond. Anyway, after the tractor runs for 30-40 minutes it begins to make a muffled "pop" noise. The noise seems to come from the muffler but the sound is one of those low-volume types that you feel as much as you hear - kinda like a tom-tom drum or and old Huey helicopter that is flying very high. Once the noise begins the tractor will usually start to run a little rough. I noticed that if I shut the tractor down and let it set for just a few seconds then start it up again the noise goes away for awhile and all is well. Yesterday rather than shut the tractor down I opened the Carb choke about halfway. The engine settled down, ran great and the noise minimized (didn't stop completely). I've had the tractor for two years and never had to adjust the choke before. Does anyone have an idea what might be creating the noise? Also, any thoughts regarding adjusting the choke? I don't mind the adjustments as long as the tractor continues to run well afterwards. Thanks for your help. Jim

I'm with James on this one...try adjusting (out) the big screw on the back of the carburator. The way I adjust mine is to adjust it out till the engine will accelerate from idle to wide open throttle without hesitating. He's right, too rich won't hurt...but too lean will make an engine run hot and hard on valves as we are taught. The other screw (small one) should be readjusted too, after it is run a while...adjust it for the fastest idle. If thats too high, back down the idle adjustment screw. Fred OH

Thank you both for your replies; I appreciate that you would take the time. I'll make a very small adjustment and see what happens. Respectfully

Jim

Funny you should mention that noise - I get something similar from my TED-20 since I rebuilt the head, valves, guides etc. - for a long time I was worried it was big end/main bearing rumble noise, then when it wasn't that I thought it was little end rattle - and it wasn't that either.

I ended up concluding it was something to do with the harmonics of the vertical silencer - perhaps a musician out there could assist?

I don't get rough running though - and I would suggest on your description that making the main jet mixture a tad richer 1/8 of a turn at a time might 'cure' your trouble. It is possible your mechanic, when he rebuilt the carb, was just a gnat's out on the mixture - and as you have just spent a fortune on the head and valves, running slightly richer isn't going to do any harm.

Just some thoughts.

James, thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions. I'll try the Carb adjustment and see what happens. Respectfully,

Jim
