Need a rear axle oil seal and coller for me TEA-20, 1951; anyone know if this is the same part as for the TE-20, TO-20, TO-30's? Parts guy doesn't seem to know. Also, anybody got a parts source for them?

Thanks,

George H

I replaced the seals on my TO-20 a few months ago. I bought the parts from this site. They were reasonably priced. They sold a ten pack of the gaskets which allowed me to use enough gaskets between the shims when setting the axle clearance. The bearings were pretty tough to pull off, but I saved them and they looked good. If you decide to replace the seals, I took pictures of every step and could email some of them if needed. I didn't want to go the sure seal route as we tried them several times over the years and they always seemed to leak. I have given the tractor a lot of hard mowing and dirt work on the side hills since the new seals were installed and they are working well and I am using the thinner 134 oil.

Yes the parts should be the same and they are available from MF, or Sparex do them too, part numbers are:-S41416 outer seal (890640M1) and S41407 Shrink on collar (890543M1)(this needs heating to 200F to expand it so it will drop on, don't try to press it on..)The Massey-Ferguson part number is in brackets. They should be available from your MF dealer or any Sparex Dealer or here on this site, top of the page and click on H.Ferguson. The MF part numbers are from the UK parts list and they should be the same in USA too. TE and TEA are the same basically, just different engines.

John,

Thanks for the reply. Happily, I have found that Sure-Seal seals fit the TEA, which appears to mean I don't need to go throught the seal replacement process. One additional question; in removing the axle trumpet to stem a pair of leaks I've discovered that the mount for the hydraulic arm has no gasket, and has been one of my oil leaks. Do you know if there should be a gasket here? It would seem so, since otherwise oil can move down the shaft of the mounting bolt from the differential housing. It doesn't look to be very well designed, as it is...thanks

Yes, the sure seal kit will fit, just make sure you pack the bearing with grease though without overdoing it. That housing you are on about was changed on later tractors from serial number 330,044, it just needs keeping tight and it did have a gasket fitted to it. To change the gasket you will need to remove the axle trumpet to get at the locknut inside. I suppose you could say if it's lasted 50 years it's not too bad.The inside nut should be changed and fit a NEW nyloc nut or it may come loose again.

John,
Thanks again for the reply. I have in fact removed the trumpet as it's gasket was leaking, too. Have done a proper job of cleaning both faces preparatory to reinstalling. The mounting bolt on the lower lift arm has a castle nut with cotter pin on it, on the inside as well, so it won't come loose. I think a liberal dose of silicone sealer under it's washer prior to tightening will do the job. It's amazing the lack of wear on the ring gear and bearings! They really look unused. I'm very impressed with this tractor. Everything is triple engineered. I think with the right maintenance it would go on for another 100 years. The brakes are particularly impressive: enough shoe to stop an 18 wheeler! This tractor hasn't been maintained; the good news is, it hasn't been worked hard, either. The steering has only an inch or so of play, and all of that is in the rear steering knuckles. I'm really enjoying the work, grease and all...thanks for your help.

George,
Are you aware that the gasket between the trumpet and the differential housing sets the bearing float on the differential bearings? It has to be 0.010". My experience was that they are no longer available for the earlier (11 bolt) trumpets, so I made them up out of brass shim stock of the right thickness. (I hunted around and couldn't find regular gasket paper in 0.010".)
Regards,
Jim

Hey Jim, Just a thought, I have never tried it, but the later gasket will that fit, I know it has more holes than you need but are the holes in the right place. They use a gasket and shims on the backplate with more holes than they need this is off the later axle assy.

No, the diameter of the later trumpet is bigger. I learned this by ordering a ring gear, bolting it to the differential, and then finding it wouldn't go through the hole! - because it was a later ring gear trying to go into an earlier tractor.
It's only a difference of about 1/2" but of course then the gasket is different.
Jim

Of course you are right Jim I remember now, you had quite a few problems with all that if I recall correctly. Its after that 325,001 serial number again....I did wonder because you can't seem to get the earlier gasket.
