Hey Everybody,
My starter makes a screeching sound when I engage it and the engine does not turn over. I am guessing I have a bad tooth on my flywheel or starter (i am guessing my flywheel). When the event occoured, I just left the tractor where it was (near the barn) because I needed to go on a trip. How hard is it to swap over the flywheel? I found something on the internet called a flywheel ring gear. It is only about $21. Does this go onto the flywheel? I am on my trip and I do not have my manual. I have never split the tractor. Is this difficult?

I had a similar occurance. The ring gear gets knocked offthe flywheel on the origninal design because of a design error. The original ring gear was sweated on from the backside and every time the starter was engaed the ring gear was knocked backward til it came off. Many people (including a former owner of my TO-30) tried to repair them by sweating them back on and tack welding them in place. Well the flywheel is white cast iron and you gotta' know how to weld that stuff. In the meantime the factory made a replacement flywheel which sweated the ring gear on from the front and machined a small lip on the back edge of the flywheel to positively prevent the ring gear from coming off. I searched the salvage yards til I found one like this and that's what I replaced my old one with ($150+shpg).
Making the switch was not very difficult. The tractor is easy to split. But get yourself a Ferguson shop manual and parts manual before you attempt it. In my opinion, they are better than the IT manuals. Sorry about the long winded reply but I thought if you had all the backgroun info, it woud help you make a decision on which way to go.
