Ignition coil too hot to touch

I am new to this and am not much of a motorhead but here goes. Tractor is a TO-35 owned for three years, been running good. Two days ago tried to start coil got super hot and would not start. Replaced with new coil and started fine. Let idle for ten minutes and just quit like turning off key and new coil super hot again. Help is appreciated.

Morning DG
When I replaced my coil on my 1952 TEA-2085 I wasnt sure which coil I should get. I posted in here for some advise and quickly got a lot of responses. What I ended up putting on was a new 12 volt coil. On the back of the coil package it said " 12 volt coil WITHOUT series resistance " It was to simple. I got rid of that little white porcelein thing that the old coil was wired into. The new coil gets warm but the tractor starts just fine and runs for hours without any concerns. Do you have a 6 volt or a twelve volt system? If you have a 12 volt sytem and are using a 6 volt coil, you need a resistor in series between the battery and coil to limit the current through the coil with the 12 volt battery.

Are your sure that your "12 volt coil" has the internal reistance built into it? The only way that I think your problem could occur is by excessive current flow, since the heat generated in the coil is proportional to the square of the current timess the resistance (I^2 x R).The only way I see for excessive current flow is too low of a resistance in the coil. As a cheap fix, you could try putting a resistor in series with the coil to see if it solves your problem. Hope this helps.
