TO 30 brake problem

My right brake keeps locking up for no apparent reason. I can free it up by driving forward but every time I try to back up it really locks up. Raising the pedal by hand doesn't seem to help. I took off the wheel and am having a terrible time getting the brake drum off. After taking off the six nuts on the back side and pounding all around the rim and on the bolts I've only been able to move the drum about a quarter inch. Is there a technique to get the drum off or do I just keep pounding away with my 2 and 1/2 pound hammer? Any experienced advice would be much appreciated.

before you do any more hammering ,there are two flat screws holding the drum to the axel ,after you locate them spray them good with some penetrating oil and tap them lightly ,you need the bigest screwdriver possible for these as if you mess up the slot you have to drill them out ,ive taken a bunch of these off using a vicegrip on the flat part of the screwdriver and leaning a lot of weight on it to keep from stripping the head .even sometimes i let the oil work over nite,then adjust the starwheel to loosen the brake shoes from the drum and it will come right off ,you probably have a broken return spring in there ,not hard to do good luck

I guess I should put those six nuts back on before I remove the flat screws. Will let you know how it goes this weekend if you are interested. Thanks again.

yes im interested ,i just finished putting sure seals on a te20 from 1949,i had a mess in there took a day to clean and get new shims back on each side ,by the way i use PB BLASTER as a penetrating oil on those screws i find it works well ,anyway work carefully if you are alone ,these things are heavy

I'm glad you mentioned PB BLASTER. I was intending to let WD 40 soak in overnight, but I should probably get some Blaster. Not keeping up with the latest products, I guess, because I wasn't familiar with the name. I'll let you know how it goes. I just want to get operational so I can cut some hay while it's still at its peak.

Danny, If you are still out there after my long absence I can report that the brake drum could only be removed by using a punch at the end of the slot and hitting it in the direction to unscrew the flat screw. On the other side it was harder and required heating with a torch first. I had not luck at all putting a vice grip on the flat part of a big screwdriver. Hope you find this message. It took this long to get the drums off.
