Wiring/Grounding TO-20 Headlights

After repainting, headlights and taillights, brackets, etc. I remounted them all and began to run new wires. I'm following the information in the FENA newsletter article, as well as a photocopy of the old "lighting" set instructions. Some of the lights work, some don't. I checked with a volt/ohmmeter and found that the left headlight and the rear worklight are not grounded, I have voltage from the hot lead to ground, but not across the light socket. So, my new paint job is keeping the light units from making a ground contact. Where do I scratch through my nice new paint in order to make that ground contact? Not a big problem, I know, but maybe somebody has been here before.

Steve,

Are you located in Delaware? I am in Middletown and noticed you have DE after your name. I had a grounding problem with one of my headlights, and I found that the nut that goes onto the light stud had to make good contact inside the hood. Hopefully that would work for yours and nobody will ever see it.

Thanks. I was thinking that the light fixture stud or the nut attaching it had to be the place. But with a new paint job on the hood and fenders, I was reluctant to scrape through it. I'll give it a try.

Steve,

You should only have to scrape on the inside of the hood to make the ground. No one will ever see it. Use some dielectric grease on the scraped area and it will always make a good contact and never rust.
