The front main bearing on my TE20 has a flange on the #1 cylinder side and a thrust washer (brass) on the timing gear side. Is this standard on all of the Continental Gas Engines for the TE20? When ordering an Overhaul Kit it askes to order the following: Front Main Bearing available with straight shell plus thrust washer or with a flange. It appears mine has both. How do you interpet this? Thanks, Ray

I have a TO-20, which has a Z-120 Continental engine. I'm guessing you have a Z-120 also. I replaced my main bearings last Winter. My manual said the Z-120 engine had the flanged front main, but the Z-129 (TO-30 engine) had a straight front bearing with a thrust washer. It also said the Z-129 bearing was interchageable with the Z-120 bearing. I think you could go either way. I opted for the flanged front main because that is what I took off.
The brass washer on the timing gear side you need either way, that doesn't come with a new bearing kit, so take care of it. I bent mine up trying to get it out, had to straighten it up before I could re-use it. From the pictures in my manual it looked like with the Z-129 straight bearing and thrust washer that the thrust washer rides against the the straight bearing... taking the place of the flange. Think I read someplace they switched to that configuration on the Z-129 because it was cheaper to manufacture than the flanged bearing.
Either way you go, make sure your oil journals on your new bearings match up with the oil journals drilled in your block. The manual also said it was acceptable if you have an extra oil passage in the bearing that is not in your block. I think most bearing now days are made to fit Z120's and Z-129's interchangably, the Z129 had an extra oil passage. Good Luck.
