TE20 Gearbox Magnesium or Aluminium?

I have recently been told that the TE20 gearbox casing is made of magnesium alloy rather than aluminium. Is this correct?? if so presumably i really wouldn`t want to apply heat to it, after all magnesium tends to burn brilliant white hot!
Also do you think that the aluminium/magnesium gearbox casing was used as a result of the steel shortage in the UK after the war, perhaps using surplus aircraft metal?

Don, I would suggest that it is aluminium, and not magnesium - not only for the sensible reason you have already given, but also because magnesium is a very expensive metal to produce let alone machine safely (think of the friction when machining!). Even a magnesium alloy would be expensive, and I can't think of a metallurgical reason why you would use it instead of aluminium.

It is possible that post-war it was sensible to use aluminium, but it is more likely that Harry F was thinking about "being light on the ground" and using the Ferguson principle to its best advantage.

Most other tractors were 'draggers' by nature, designed to pull what were horse drawn implements, so they needed the mass. The Grey Fergie did not need that weight, so why use a cast iron gearbox?

Just some thoughts.

I always presumed the aluminum gearbox was used for reasons of BOTH weight and available resources. I'm always amazed at the amount of thought Mr. Ferguson put into these tractors.

How about the gray paint? I've often wondered if Harry found a bunch of leftover battleship paint...? :-)

Mike, I hate to say it, but there have been "Discussions" over here that that is exactly the reason there is no 'proper' or 'real' Ferguson grey.

In other words, yes, he did buy up a job lot or more of ex RN grey paint, which was not always mixed to the same exact tint. Anyone who has seen a rating painting a ship will get the picture.

It has been said that looking at a line of restored Fergies over here is like looking at a Pantone colour chart :)
