I just got a Furguson tractor. First question is what year is it? The serial # is TO-10A65, second question is what type of gear oil do I use for the gear box?

You need a straight mineral oil (No detergent in it) 80 or 90 weight depending on where you live and whether you are over or under 50F The oil is NOT hydraulic oil OR gear oil its more like an engine oil in viscosity...if you use a detergent oil you will clean all the crap out of the axle and hydraulics and have it going through the pump and making a hash of it.

Wow, it's a good thing I asked. I was about to buy regular gear oil at the tractor store. I have never heard of using mineral oil for lubrication before. Thanks so much for the info.

Yeah this thing is always happening on here...Its just the tractors are so old now and when they were designed and made, not many machines used a detergent oil and there was no filter available to do the job...really at this time only diesels used detergents then they started with "universal" oils that have some detergent in, but in these old systems its best that no detergent is used then all the crap gets trapped in the sludge and doesnt get carried around and through the pump etc causing endless problems, nowadays we use filters and detergent oils to keep everything clean. Well that is if the operator/owner changes the oil as they are supposed to do.

Ok, I went out to walmart and they only carried GL5 transmission oil. No mineral oil or GL1 anywhere to be found. They had another type just called heavy duty tractor gear oil. It said it meet the GL5 requirements. I did not buy it.

I went to TSC and all they carried was a 2 gallon container of Traveller Ford Tractor Transmission fluid. It states on the jug API Service GL-1 and states for use in Ford tractors manual transmissions from 1939 to 1952. I bought this stuff. I assume this is what I was looking for. Somehwre on this board someone stated GL-1 is mineral oil. Did I get the right stuff ? This is the only thing available in my area.
